With the impending national highway projects under the Bharatmala Programme, the National Highways Authority of India is effortlessly working to gather funds for the same. The organisation is deploying multiple ways to generate the amount that is required for the suitable construction of the infrastructure concerning the national highways in India. Following signing their very first TOT agreement with the Australian Company, Macquarie, and NHAI is set to add an additional amount of $2 million after acquiring $1.6 million from the company. This is exactly where the highway bundle projects are going to come into play.

The decision of launching the second set of bundle projects was devised after the successful implementation of the first bundle of highway monetisation. Owing to the growing success of these projects, the National Highways Authority of India has decided to propose similar bundle projects for the prospect of highway monetisation, possibly by the end of May to generate suitable revenue for the execution of the ongoing and future highway projects.

In a recent interview with an esteemed daily, Mr Deepak Kumar, the Chairman of NHAI said that they are planning on proposing two tranches of highway projects under the highway monetisation scheme, based around the toll, operate and transfer (TOT) model in the month of May itself. He further claimed that the two tranches of highway projects will include around 18-20 roads and highway projects, introduced in two different bundles. NHAI is expecting to generate around $2 million in revenue from these projects which is definitely going to boost the overall economic growth of the country.

The successful implementation of the first bundle of highway projects has paved its way for the upcoming ones. NHAI has already planned out the TOT agreements that they are going to present in four tranches in this year. The first tranche which was presented back in October 2017 included nine of the most important stretches, including five from Andhra Pradesh and the remaining four from Gujarat. The officials are working on developing detailed project reports concerning 25 highway projects around the country. The Government is also working on assessing the current highway assets with the implementation of a number of ongoing projects.

The recent reports suggest that over 1000km is expected to be bid out in the coming month in the second and third bundle while the fourth tranche is going to be proposed in the month of June or July. For the bids in the month of May, NHAI is going to propose highway stretches around Odisha and West Bengal in the second bundle and the remaining stretches in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Telangana in the third bundle. The last bundle which is going to be proposed in the month of June or July is expected to cover areas in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. NHAI is working to promote the ambitious highway projects that have been administered under the Bharatmala programme. The highway monetisation is expected to generate a sustainable amount of revenue aside from the market funds that they are currently in the process of acquiring.
