EconCore produces honeycomb sandwich materials that are used in automobiles, furniture, buildings, and package designs. Just recently, it revealed that it had tested honeycomb structures constructed with modified PC, nylon 66, and PPS and that it was going to keep on pursuing improvement with those and other high-end polymers.

EconCore’s patented ThermHex technology has already produced honeycombs made with high-performance thermoplastics. It utilizes a swift in line operations sequence to create structures from a single continuously extruded thermoplastic film. Such consists of an operation series of thermoforming, folding and bonding. It has the potential to work with various thermoplastics and ultimately produce honeycombs of which density, size, and thickness can be modified with simple hardware and/or process parameter adjustments. The method would provide completed composite sandwich materials that are both effective and practical.

Thermoplastic honeycomb cores for composites offer a performance-to-weight ratio that is much easier to achieve than with other types of core materials. ThermHex cores are about 80 percent lighter than solid thermoplastic cores and offer greater thermal insulation, acoustic performance, higher heat resistance, and excellent flame resistance. EconCore is working to provide materials for aerospace and railway industries and sees potential for aircrafts.

Ecomass Technologies

For nearly thirty years, Ecomass Technologies has delivered groundbreaking solutions through advanced thermoplastic, composite materials, high density polymers, and high density plastic and engineered thermoplastics. It’s worked with government and private industry to solve physical property and material challenges to meet their application needs. Its skills and expertise in the formulation and development of high-density thermoplastic compounds provides its customers, original equipment manufacturers, and material processors, the freedom to focus on design, form and function, while it solves material challenges. By providing the best and lowest-cost materials, it allows its customers to develop and produce the parts and allows them to compete in their respective markets.
