When visiting Volkswagen dealers, Perth drivers often flock to the Golf. This iconic model has been a popular choice for decades, but serious petrolheads look to the type R. As the Golf R Wagon is due in showrooms in early 2018, here we will take a quick look, so you can determine if this is the model to set your sights on.

The Model Basics:

When visiting local Volkswagen dealers, Perth drivers will find that Golf R Wagon is taking its time arriving. Following on from the launch of the Mk 7.5 R Hatch and GTI variants, the Golf R Wagon is not expected until January 2018. For now, there are just 300 Wolfsburg Edition units to keep serious petrolheads appeased.

The Golf R Wagon will only be available in a DSG, so there will be no manual option, but it is touted as a performance model. This means that there are fewer luxury touches, like large screen infotainment and leather trim. However, you will get your hands on a sporty number that sits low on adaptive dampers and 19 inch alloys for a ride hard to beat.

Inside the Cabin:

While pitched as a performance vehicle, it doesn’t mean that you will be struggling for comfort. There is bags of room, with a cargo area that should shame many SUV models, particularly when the rear seats are down. There are also bucket seats with plenty of legroom for even rear passengers. Some nice touches inside the cabin also include dark window tint, ambient LED lighting, and proximity key.

The Performance:

As you would expect from any model at Volkswagen dealers, the Golf R Wagon is engineered with precision. However, this model takes it one step further. You can load the R Wagon down with cargo, and it will still offer a fantastic driving experience. Even fully laden, you can hit top speeds of 240 km/h on the open road with a civil and quiet engine response. Put the R Wagon into Race mode, and the engine takes on a gruffer tone that makes the model feel even more sporty. The Australian spec model will be equipped with a turbocharged, four cylinder 2.0 litre engine that offers 214 kW power and 380 Nm torque. This is channelled through the 4Motion AWD system and a newly developed high torque, seven speed dual clutch DSG auto transmission. VW claims that this model will smash the 5.0 second barrier on a zero to 100 km/h standing start.
