The national highways of India have been going about as extraordinary facilitators for multitude of purposes especially trade. Relatively they are less long with other roadways viz., Village roads, state highways, district roads. Merchants depend on national expressways as they bolster monetary joining of India. Insights uncover that around 40% of all the trade going within Indian geographical boundaries is facilitated by the national highway network. On the opposite side, this situation brought about increment of vehicular activity, which got turned into vehicular congestion these days. So, to combat the visible problems, the Government of India (GoI) has been adopting new technologies and introduced new initiatives. One of the latest initiatives rolled out by the NHAI in this regard is Video-based surveillance system, which could screen and report vehicular movement patterns at Toll plazas.

The National Highways Authority of India, which is a statutory body made by the NHAI Act 1988 of parliament of India, was tasked to support, administration, and development of the allocated segment of the national highway network. Presently, the NHAI has been entrusted to adopt and execute the video-monitoring framework over all the Toll plazas under its ward.

The video-based observation framework would help the operations department at Toll plazas to manage the traffic at their ambit. It would get the NHAI with subtle elements relating to the volume of movement making it to act in like manner. Top notch cameras would be installed at the Toll squares to click stamp sized pictures and send them to the server at regular intervals (30 Minutes), which would relay the same to the territorial branches of NHAI and central command of NHAI. The authorities there would react to the significant substance, which was passed on by the video-based observation framework, and would deal with the situation at Toll Plazas. Aspects like vehicular traffic pattern and density would be observed through this framework, thus making it easy for the operators and authorities respond to the actionable data and information. As this framework is new to India, soon, the NHAI would make an agreement with the Korea Expressway Corporation, through which the NHAI is hoping to actualize this framework at a quick pace.

The Korea Expressway Corporation, which has a good record in managing vehicular traffic related issues, has been picked by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for its mastery and proven administrative feats. The company has its operational centre in Korea from which it has been dealing with the traffic related issues of the whole Korean roadway network. It began utilizing forefront advancements long back. In the event that the said settlement will happen soon, at that point NHAI would begin utilizing the Corporation’s aptitude.

By receiving the video-based observation framework, the current FASTag framework would get another accomplice in checking congestion at Toll plazas. FASTag Toll collection system, which was embraced by the NHAI last year, has been running effectively crosswise over a large number of the Toll plazas by clearing the glitches that it encountered in its operations. The FASTag Toll collection framework was begun with a sole objective to offer seamless travel to commuters and traders. If the video-based surveillance system would be put into operations across India, then it along with FASTag system would complement the NHAI’s and GoI’s efforts in curbing the congestion at Toll plazas and national highways.
