The NHAI is Set to Install Video Surveillance System at Toll Plazas
Posted: May 17, 2018
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is taking its efforts to make the National Highway Network of India top-notch to another level. By using latest technology and infrastructure the NHAI is working to fix the problem of traffic congestion on the highway toll plazas.
As it is a known fact that the highways are the lifeline of the travel and transportation in the country, it makes it obvious to imagine the number of vehicles travel on these highway roads every day. The toll plazas create a bottleneck on these highways, and slight mismanagement can lead to heavy traffic jams near these toll plazas.
In order to avoid such scenarios and provide highway commuters with a hassle-free experience, the National Highway Authority of Indiahas decided to install hi-tech video surveillance system at the toll plazas. The surveillance system will be equipped to do the real-time mapping of traffic congestion. It will send time-stamped photographs at a regular interval of 30 minutes to the traffic control rooms at the regional offices. The project, currently, is its early stage and has been taken up only for ten major toll plazas, which face heavy traffic congestion on regular basis, around the country.
The NHAI will be finishing the installation of the video surveillance system at these selected toll plazas in next six months. Once the project sees the light of success, and then NHAI will extend the reach of this programme to the other 200 Toll Plazas as well, which witness daily traffic flow of more than 10,000 vehicles.
The video surveillance system will be equipped with the hi-tech cameras to ensure the exchange of real-time information with the traffic control rooms at the regional offices (ROs). If the matter is resolved with the intervention of these regional offices within an hour or at the time of emergency the same information will be forwarded to NHAI headquarters by the system.
The facility is made to stay active round the clock and maintain the smooth flow of traffic at all times. The network setup for the exchange of the crucial and timely information, between the toll plazas and headquarters, requires high-speed connectivity, for which the NHAI has already connected the respective regional office with the high-speed internet network.
According to the NHAI, the brain behind this excellent idea is MrAkhilesh Srivastava, who is the Chief General Manager (IT and Highway Operations) of NHAI. While explaining the surveillance system he said that the cameras are programmed to send the time-stamped photos to the regional offices and NHAI’s Command Control Room at regular interval of 30 minutes.
The system has an imaginary IP line set for the camera, and if the traffic queue at the toll plazas crosses that line, then the cameras’ smart technology will guide them to switch to the video mode and the system will start sending time-stamped videos to the regional offices at regular intervals with alerts as per escalation matrix. If the regional offices fail to clear the congestion within an hour, the matter will automatically be escalated to the NHAI headquarters.
The NHAI is determined to change the face of Indian highway network and bring it at par with the other developed countries around the globe. This is just a small step towards the larger goal of development.
