A Basic Guide to High School Placement Test (HSPT)

HSPT stands for High School Placement Test. It is an examination designed for grade-level students who are pursuing getting into Catholic high schools. Administered by Scholastic Testing Services, it is of its kinds test created to assist with the placement of students to enter high school. The test is conducted with a view to assessing students’ capabilities in cognitive and major skill areas. In order to give fair results to students, the Scholastic Testing Service has set a standard for the exam.

When you look to register for the exam, you will need to register to take it at the high school you wish to attend. However, it’s mandatory for every student to send their scores to other schools as well. So, you should send your report cards to other schools as well. Usually, HSPT exam is made up of five different multiple-choice test sections. The sections include language, mathematics, quantitative, reading and verbal.

HSPT Exam Testing Options

When you go for any of the five HSPT sections, you will be taking the Open HSPT. Open HSPT is a format of the test. It is designed in a way that can provide national normative measures for each section. But, there are some exceptions to it. If a student takes part in a lease or score program, he will be given a seventh-grade edition of the HSPT. This is referred to as the pre-HSPT.

Exam Formats

High School Placement Test is available in specialized formats. But, you need to request for it. These specialized formats include Audio, Braille, and Large Print.

Scoring

The exam is scored as per the following:

  • Per test section – In this process, one point is added to each correct answer.
  • No points are reduced for any wrong answer in all the test sections. So, it is important to attempt all questions even if you’re not sure whether you are giving the right answer.
Mathematics Skills Test

In the HSPT math practice test, you will have 64 questions to solve in 45 minutes. Remember calculator and other scratch paper is prohibited in the examination hall. You may be allowed to write in your test booklet. The questions cover the content areas and skills, which include algebraic equations and concepts, arithmetic, geometry, word problems like distance, rate, time, and work.
