Sonamarg: As you step out of Srinagar, another famous spot you should reach is Sonmarg, situated northeastwards of Srinagar on the Srinagar-Ladakh Highway. It is a two hour-thirty minutes drive from the State's capital. Sonmarg, meaning "Meadow of Gold", attracts a major tourist population owing to its 'Thajiwas Glacier. The fascinating part is that you can easily access this glacier by starting a hike from the highway to its top and back only within five hours without much trouble on the way. However, for those of you with health issues and on the time-saving trips, taking a pony ride or part-taxi-part-walking trip are the alternatives to resort to. These alternative options are expensive though. Sonmarg has been featured in several Hindi films, so you might even get the air of a celebrity once you are climbing the glacier.
