Memory foam mattresses are an alternative to spring mattresses that are growing rapidly because they conform to the contours of the body and provide excellent support and comfort.

In today's European market, memory foam mattresses are sold more than traditional Zinus mattress.

Tips for choosing a foam mattress with quality memory

Knowing what to look for is the key to finding the best memory foam mattress to meet your needs. Here are some important things you should know before buying a memory foam mattress:

1. The density of the foam

The density of the foam actually has little to do with the feeling that a mattress provides and has more to do with its durability. A memory foam mattress of 5 pounds per cubic foot will last, on average, 10 years longer than a 3-pound memory foam.

Most high-end mattresses, including the Tempur-Pedic, have foams with a density of 5-7 lb. See our comparison with Tempur.

What buyers should consider: Many companies boast a 5-pound memory foam mattress, but they do not specify that this dense foam represents only the first inch of the mattress. The following layers are weak memory foams of 2 or 3 pounds of density.

2. mmHg

mmHg is the unit of measurement used to determine the reaction of mattresses against pressure. A low value of mmHg means better blood circulation, but this is difficult to achieve. Blood circulation becomes a problem at approximately 30 mmHg or more.

According to the health industry, a level of 32 mmHg or less is considered to relieve pressure. Greater pressure relief = fewer pressure points = fewer turns in the bed, which is the goal here.

Essentia mattresses offer the best rating in the industry with 12.43 mmHg to 200 lb.

3. ILD of the foam (indentation load deflection)

The ILD, or indentation load deflection, of a mattress, ranges from 6 to 40. The ILD of most memory foam mattresses on the market varies between 10 and 16. Many of the best memory foam mattresses have several layers, each with a different mmHg, which increases the comfort of the mattress because the layers work together.

4. Where is the mattress manufactured?

Many mattress companies deceptively claim that their products are manufactured in Canada or the US. To reduce costs, mattress components are imported from foreign countries and assembled in Canada or the US.

Rarely tests are performed on the imported components of the mattresses and there is no way to know what chemicals are used in the composition of the mattress. Strong chemical odors are hidden with industrial perfumes or even with green tea extracts before exporting the products.

Foam with natural memory vs. Foam with regular memory

Regular memory foam, also known as viscoelastic foam, is made with petroleum-derived chemicals.

Because memory foam is a synthetic material, it traps body heat in a similar way to nylon and polyester fabrics. Sleeping hot or upset by the heat, as well as chemical odors are the main complaints among owners of memory foam mattresses. All this is due to the chemical composition.
