However, many people don’t necessarily understand all of the ins and outs of air conditioning units and the work that they require to keep them functioning correctly and efficiently. Here at Air Spares we believe that it is important that all of our customers should have the opportunity to understand their air conditioning units. Here, we answer your questions.

What is an air con and how does it work?

In very basic terms, an air conditioning unit transfers heat from one area to another, most often by transferring heat from the inside of your home to the outside. The majority of air conditioning units have both an internal and external unit which work in harmony together to cool your home. This is acheived by the indoor unit converting the warm indoor air to cold indoor air (thus ‘conditioning’ the room), and the outdoor condenser in turn transfers the heat to the outdoors. Likewise, if you want help to keep your home warmer in winter, air con units can be used to propel the cold air out with ‘reverse cycle’ air-conditioning.

What is the difference between ducted and split air conditioning?

There are two main times of AC units, split and ducted air conditioning units. Split AC is the most common type of air conditioning in Australia, whereas with ducted air conditioning the ‘conditioned air’ is pumped through the whole house and vented into each of the rooms. Whether you choose ducted or split AC, installation must be carried out by a trained, licensed and insured professional.

Do I really need to maintain and repair my air conditioning unit?

The short answer is yes, you absolutely do! Regularly servicing your air con is the best way to maintain your system to its full potential and ensure that is functioning as efficiently as possible. Over time parts can become worn or damaged and need replacing. Repairing the smaller issues with your air con promptly means that you prevent the small problems from becoming bigger ones which require increasingly higher costs.

Do I need to clean my air conditioner?

Many people do not realise that it is actually very important to clean their air conditioning unit. Over time AC units gather a layer of mould and grime that builds up inside the air con. Even if you can’t see the filth on the outside of the unit, you can be sure that it is lying there on the inside. This isn’t just a horrible thought, but it is also terrible for both you and your family’s health, particularly if any members of the household have breathing difficulties.
