Though Mazda in SA jumped on the independence wagon a little later than its Global counterpart it managed to obtain sole distribution rights from Ford just over three years ago. The split from Ford may have caused a loss of a scale however Mazda was determined to re-establish the brand from the very beginning. Advantages of the split were seen to be superior to the global partnership they held for around three decades, with Mazda being able to focus on its own development and nothing else.

Though the partnership had its gains, Mazda had come to realise that they needed the chance to create their own strategy within the SA market. Decisions could now be made without considering anything but Mazda, and this autonomy could be the stepping stone towards greater innovation and success. Since operating independently Mazda SA has seen a steady growth in sales with a figure of 4500 units in 2014 rising to 12 000 units in 2016. The aim is to ensure the company’s expansion is supported and maintained as they go on. Their most recent reports have shown positive momentum despite the tough economic conditions faced in 2017.

Post-split, Mazda enthusiasts were treated to a selection of vehicle launches including the new Mazda 3, Mazda 6 and new variants to its CX-5 range. The SkyActiv technology was also introduced to the CX-5 range and has since been making all the difference for Mazda’s profitability, not just in SA but worldwide. The SkyActiv technology is an exceptional innovation, with the purpose of reducing fuel on consumption on traditional internal combustion engines.

Despite being an independent entity for just a handful of years, the Mazda brand has been in SA for over 40 years and has managed to integrate well into the market since. Ensuring the ‘Mazda Experience’ for all Mazda owners and potential owners is a priority with a focus on providing offerings that are good value for money on versatile and quality vehicles. Though there was some frenzy over how things would pan out for customers seeking new Mazda vehicles, Mazda MD David Hughes assured the public that talks were underway and dealers were being obtained in an ‘open manner’. With the influx of opportunity within the brand, Mazda dealers have popped up all over the country, servicing a whole range of areas since.
