Boxing classes are great for beginners and experts alike - but there is one thing that beginners will have to pick up quickly; the terminology.

Our boxing classes in Melbourne CBD and Prahran are held by trained fighting professionals, so you’ll learn real boxing techniques and movements. But if you’ve never tried boxing, or any type of martial arts for that matter, it might seem a little daunting. And let's be honest; not many people feel right at home in their first boxing class without any prior experience. Our cheat sheet on boxing’s most common terms can make sure you’re confident and prepared for your first class, and ready to unleash your energy into a high-octane class of power and strength.

Boxing Classes: Decoded

Jab:

A jab is a fast, direct punch, so you’ll have fun watching your agility and power increase with practice. This is the most common punch in professional boxing, as you are usually well-protected by your side-on stance, with your front foot forward and rear hand guarding the face as the front hand makes contact.

Cross:

From the same stance, instead throw your rear hand across your body and directly into your target. This allows you lever your arm with your body, adding more force as your weight is moved accordingly.

Hook:

A hook can be a powerful blow, as you hold your arm out with the elbow bent into a ‘hook’ shape. Using your body to pivot, rather than your arm to swing, move swiftly and connect with your target. A hook can cause serious harm in boxing, as it is difficult to see coming and often targets the most vulnerable spot of the cranium.

Uppercut:

The uppercut is a vertical punch, used in close range to target the opponent's chin and jaw (or a downwards angled pad). Bend your knees slightly and push up using your legs for maximum force.

Southpaw:

This is the boxing term for someone who is left-handed, and this will require you to adjust your training to the reverse of the rest of the class that would usually be directed at right-handed people - if you’re a leftie, you’re probably very accustomed to doing this.
