National Institutes of Health has estimated that more than 7 percent of Americans suffer from major depressive disorders. What’s even worse is the study that has concluded about 40 million anxiety disorders, every year. No doubt pharmaceuticals market is being dominated by anxiety and depression medicines, the question is, "Are these drugs really effective?"

Unveiling the unfortunate picture, it has been concluded that more than half of the sufferers don’t get any relief from these expensive supplements. As per another study, more than 38% respondents turn to other treatments with a hope to feel better and mentally stable.

If you are also a victim of anxiety or depression in any way, knowledge regarding powerful supplements that not only claim but work as well, is the need of the hour. With this concern in mind, let us take a look at some reliable supplements that are worth spending money on.

1. FISH OIL

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil is a primary building block in optimal brain chemistry. Lack of omega-3s inhibits the nerve signals from transmitting properly. When the brain isn’t able to function properly, you feel anxious or depressed. Researchers have found that adults with low omega-3s have increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines-molecules that are produced when one is stressed. Hence, feeding the body with enough omega-3s needs to be taken seriously.

If you don’t eat fish, DHA supplements from plant sources are good alternatives.

2. B-COMPLEX VITAMINS

An imbalance of brain neurotransmitters is one the main reasons behind mild depression. Vitamins B6 and B3 assist the body to preserve tryptophan and convert it into serotonin. Health experts have concluded that clinically depressed people have low levels of vitamin B6 in their blood.

For those with deficiency of other two neurotransmitters: norepinephrine and dopamine, taking vitamin B12 folic acid is the way to go.

3. 5-HTP

5-hydroxytryptophan is a natural way to accelerate up the serotonin levels. This amino acid is converted into serotonin in the body. It has been found that people consuming 300mg of 5-HTP experience relief from depression and feel happy.

4. THEANINE

Found in green tea, this amino acid is known to trigger the release of GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain. By activating the chief calming neurotransmitters, GABA promotes relaxations and lowers anxiety. As it is not easy for the body to absorb supplements rich in synthesized GABA, it is suggested to consume theanine, which apart from being easily digestible also boosts GABA levels.
