Considering Villa Rentals on Menorca for Your Next Holiday

The economic crises that started way back at the end of 2007 seem now, for some countries at least, to be receding. How have they affected the holiday island of Menorca and its great tradition of villa rentals?

The good new is, it appears not much at all! Villa rentals continue to be one of the most popular forms of accommodation here, and, as a Mediterranean destination, the island is going from strength to strength.

Nobody was immune

In terms of effects, the various financial crises that started at the end of 2007 managed to hit just about everyone across the globe – but particularly in Europe and North America. Inevitably, these traumas were felt by the holiday industry over several years. When times are tough, holidays tend to be moved down the priority list of many families and individuals. Spain as a country fared particularly badly. Nobody who watches or reads the news can have failed to see how the country’s economy has suffered, both as a result of the crises globally as well as some economic problems that were particular to Spain – notably the unsustainable bubble in property construction.

Of course, it also was a victim, in part, of its own success in attracting holidaymakers. Tourism was and is a very major component of the Spanish economy, and if numbers declined then their economy was always going to feel the pinch.

Different areas, different effects

Yet, almost inevitably, different parts of Spain were affected to very significantly different levels. Whilst many of the high-density holiday destinations of the mainland, particularly in southern Spain, suffered badly because of a large-scale decline in visitor numbers and falling property prices, in eastern Spain and in the Balearics the effects were typically less pronounced.

On Menorca, villa rentals have never played a role in ‘mass tourism’. That’s because the island has pointedly avoided, for the most part, the temptation to go for large-scale resorts and numbers, focusing instead on quality and integrity of the holidays on offer.

So, as a result, the island has been mainly spared some of the worst of the effects of the various waves of financial catastrophe that engulfed many other Spanish and European holiday destinations.

Financially attractive

Even so, the holiday industry in Menorca has had to react just as those in other destinations have. As a general rule, prices have stabilized and many operators are now continuing to try to offer the best deals possible in order to attract clients.

That makes Menorca even more appealing. It’s a relatively short hop flight from the UK, has guaranteed weather, beautiful beaches and a very much ‘discerning visitor’ culture that appeals to many. If you add to that the attractions of positive pricing, the advantages of a Menorcan holiday seem all the clearer.

Generally, it’s hard to see too many visible signs of the global financial recessions when you’re travelling around the island. Yes, prices seem very reasonable but then again, they always did given what was on offer.

So, many visitors will continue to look closely at villa rentals on the island as their first holiday preference. That's good news for everyone!
