If you’re considering the possibility of embarking on Menorca villa holidays for the first time, you might understandably have a few questions that are not really being answered by that glossy brochure.

So, here are some top FAQs with some no-nonsense answers provided.

How peaceful / lively is the island?

It depends upon your resort but most people would agree that the island is primarily all about calm and natural attractions rather than 24x7 mayhem and rampage.

Of course, some of the bigger towns such as Ciutadella or Mahon have venues that are lively, but most of the coastal resorts tend to go for a calmer more relaxed ambiance. For example, development on the island is and always has been strictly controlled. So, if you’re looking for mega-resorts and partying in the street every night, the island might not be for you.

Can you get some intellectual stimulation there?

Yes! If you’re the sort that enjoys a bit of beach but not spending every day and all day on it, you’ll love Menorca. Villa holidays will enable you the freedom to get around at your leisure and the two above-mentioned towns are wonderful to explore. They have multiple historic attractions as well as several cultural venues. There are also some fascinating villages and archaeological sites to explore, so you’ll certainly be able to get away from sea and sand if you feel the urge to do so.

What are prices like?

This sort of question is always tricky because it depends upon what you’re comparing. Many people taking Menorca villa holidays find eating out excellent value for money – as is local grocery-type shopping when compared to ‘back home’. The same is true for many of the craft items you’ll see for sale along with things like excursions and trips.

Is there still a real local culture?

Yes – and that’s one of the best things about this island. Of course, in the centre of some resorts there may be a slight international Mediterranean culture, but in the villages, towns and even in the small to medium-sized resorts, you’ll get a very distinctive local cultural feel. Once again, this is due to the efforts the island has made over many decades to preserve its culture and to keep tourism proportionate.

Why is the ‘British link’ mentioned so much in advertisements?

Without going into a history lesson, the island was under British control on and off for about a hundred years during the 18th and early part of the 19th century. There are therefore very strong historic links between, for example, the Royal Navy and the capital of Mahon. You will still see some evidence of that in things like the architecture in Mahon but it was a long time ago now and the traces are faint. Don’t worry, Menorca villa holidays won’t seem too much like ‘home away from home’ – this is a wonderful and unique location.
