In Menorca, vacation properties are popular as a base for families, groups or couples, especially in the summer. The island may not be quite as well known as Ibiza and Mallorca, but this makes it a more desirable location for many holidaymakers. If you are thinking about visiting this lovely island yourself, here are five interesting things that you may not know about it.

1. It Is a Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO declared the island a biosphere reserve in 1993, and it is therefore an important area for conversation. The most important natural area is S'Albufera d'es Grau, which you can visit during your holiday.

2. It Has More Beaches than Ibiza and Mallorca

If you are looking for a beach holiday, you cannot do much better than Menorca. Vacation rentals are often located very close to a beach, which is not difficult seeing as there are so many to choose from! The island is smaller than both Ibiza and Mallorca, and yet it has more beaches than both of them put together. From busier beaches near the main towns, to isolated coves you'll have all to yourself, you'll be spoiled for choice here.

3. Its Highest Point is Just 342 Metres

This island may be many things, but one thing it is not is high! Most of the island is not far about sea level, and the highest point is the summit of Monte Toro. It is an easy climb and the views from the top are amazing.

4. It is Home to Many Prehistoric Monuments

There are many prehistoric monuments to see dotted all over Menorca. Vacation properties in any location will never be situated far from one of the monuments, as there are so many. A great number date back thousands of years and, in fact, the island is trying to get UNESCO World Heritage Site status at the present time.

Talayots and taules are found all over the island, as are navetas, which are ancient burial sites. The best of these is Naveta d’es Tudons, which is found near Ciutadella. It dates back to 1,300 BC and you can do a tour of the site. The remains of about 50 bodies were found when it was excavated over half a century ago.

5. Mayonnaise Was Invented Here

Although the exact origins of mayonnaise are debated, one version puts its invention right here on this tiny island. Back in the mid-18th century, the French Duke de Richelieu landed on the island, and it was during his time here that his chef invented what we now call mayonnaise, named after the city of Mahón.

If you're tempted to visit Menorca, vacation opportunities are at their best throughout the summer months. It is a fascinating destination that will provide you with a wonderful holiday whether you want to spend your time lying on a beautiful beach or sightseeing.
