Over the last couple of years, technology has seen a dramatic growth in the smartphone and computer industry. Latest cell phones, tablets, and laptops have made our lives more convenient but as always, there’s a trade-off. Smartphones, display screens of computers, flat screen television sets and other digital devices such as tablets and iPads emit blue light, an extended exposure to which can have a damaging effect on the retina of the eyes and is linked to the development of the age-related vision disorder called macular degeneration. Other commonly reported symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, and insomnia, to name a few. It may look as if people experience more of these symptoms at night, and in the dark, especially when there’s no external light source.

So, what can be done to reduce the effects of this form of light?

If you too are experiencing these symptoms, you may want to invest in a pair of good quality blue light blocking glasses as an antidote to this problem. These glasses have a special type of yellow or amber tint that can effectively block out the blue light. This alleviates the uneasiness linked with staring at digital screens for extended periods of time while limiting the exposure to blue light to safer levels. While sunglasses also block blue light to some extent but you wouldn’t want to put them on while browsing your smartphone at night. Would you?

Along with using good quality blue light filter glasses, you can also have a blue light filter installed on the devices in order to minimize the exposure to harmful blue light. Eye exercises that reduce eye strain can also prove to be beneficial in dealing with the symptoms of blue light. For instance, when looking at digital screens, you may want to take a break every so often to look away from your close up work and focus on a distant object about 10 to 20 feet away.

It has been scientifically verified that overexposure to blue light on digital devices can have some really serious effects on the eyes. Fortunately, there are some safety measures you can have recourse to in order to effectively do away with the damaging effects of blue light. These include the use of blue light filter glasses, screen filter apps on digital devices and the practice of eye relaxation techniques, to name a few. In due time, by applying these simple safety measures, you can eliminate the risks of eye problems associated with overexposure to the harmful blue light.
