If you're planning a vacation in Italy, you are bound to be very excited about the prospect of your trip. Italy has a huge number of places to visit and things to enjoy, so you will be spoilt for choice when making your plans. Below is an introduction to the highlights of a vacation in Italy, so take note and plan your journey with these in mind.

Top Places to Visit

Assisi is a wonderful destination situated in Umbria, which is a region close to Tuscany. The birthplace of Saint Francis, the patron saint of the country, this town is a peaceful place of pilgrimage for many. Here you can visit museums, churches, ruins and the basilica where the famous saint’s tomb is kept.

Florence is famous for its many museums, but the Galleria dell’Accademia is one of the best. Boasting the incredible Statue of David, this museum is a treasure trove of wonderful art and sculptures arranged in twenty four different rooms.

Everyone has heard of The Leaning Tower of Pisa, and when you're on vacation in Italy this should definitely be on your agenda. This iconic tower is a stunning building that leans 5.5 degrees. There are 294 winding steps up to the top, where you are greeted with views of the city and surrounding area. The tower is a fine example of Romanesque architecture, originally built as the bell tower of the cathedral and cemetery that stand close by.

Rome is well known for many reasons, but the Coliseum is one of its highlights. This imposing structure was initially known as the Flavius Amphitheatre and was the largest public entertainment arena in ancient times. From comedies to gladiatorial contests and public killings to animal fights, this arena was used for all manner of events.

The lakes of Northern Italy are nothing short of stunning and Lake Como is one of the most beautiful of them all. Many tourists consider this a very romantic destination and when you consider its location, nestled into the hills and mountains of the northern Lake District, it is easy to see why. The area hosts many festivals and there is biking, fishing, hiking and plenty of other outdoor activities here to keep you occupied too.

When on vacation in Italy, make sure you take time out to sample the fine wines and wonderful cuisine of each region. Cafe culture is part of life here and a morning cappuccino is a necessary part of the day! Complement it with a ricotta filled pastry or a simple croissant and you will be indulging in a real Italian tradition. Likewise, begin your evening with a Prosecco or Campari along with antipasti nibbles and soon you will feel just like a local.
