Timeless Sardinia - Honeymoons To Remember
Posted: Apr 17, 2014
Looking for a romantic destination? It’s Mediterranean, but unlike the other Mediterranean islands; it’s Italian, but very different from the rest of Italy; it has an identity all its own. It’s Sardinia! Honeymoons here are quite unlike any other Mediterranean or Italian getaway, and quite simply, this can be one of the most romantic trips you could ever make to cap off your wedding vows.
So just what makes the difference in Sardinia? Honeymoons here can be remarkably different from an experience anywhere else in the world and one hint is its location: equally distant from both Europe and Africa, it has a rich culture all its own. From Neolithic sites and Roman edifices to amazing natural formations, this is a destination that truly has it all.
Not Your Ordinary Mediterranean Destination
Of course, you don't need to forgo the one thing that Mediterranean getaways are known for - namely turquoise seas and white sand beaches. It’s just that there’s so much more to see in Sardinia. Honeymoons can be action packed or totally relaxing – depending on your plans. But whatever type of holiday you and your loved one want out of this spectacular island, there’s one thing for sure - it’s going to be unforgettable.
Top of The World
You’ll be able to undertake plenty of romantic pursuits here. For fabulous views, why not head out to watch the sunrise in the east from Punta La Marmora in the Gennargentu Mountains, or for unbeatable natural vistas enjoy the southern breezes from the Sarrabus mountains. The summit of the imposing Monte Limbara in the north offers a wonderful blend of natural and manmade art, all while gazing out on the plains of Tempio. It is also the site of the musical event called "Time in Jazz" as well as the setting of an eco-museum, "Semida" (Sardinian for ‘path’), which features installations from world-famous artists like Erik Chevalier, Giovanni Campos, Clara Bonfiglio, Paola Dessy, and more.
Drive Around, Toasting Your Everlasting Love
Since pre-Roman times, vineyards and winemaking have been part of the culture and traditions of Sardinia. Honeymoons on the island can't help but be defined by the romantic nature of this ancient industry, and the wines of the region can be enjoyed right where they are made. Vineyard tours will open up a world of fine wine and you can sample Cannonau, the famous red wine of the area, if you’re into reds or Vermentino de Sardegna for those who favour whites. Travel the island's wine country road, which is dotted with pastoral views and olive groves. It extends along a stretch of coastline from Orosei then into the mountainous regions, with winemakers in almost every village you pass.
Don’t miss Cantine di Orgosolo, a loose group of 19 winemakers who have come together to create their own artisan wines. They have an excellent 10-euro cannonau, but if you want something really special to toast your honeymoon, try their special reserve, at around 22 euro. The villages of Oliena and Ogliastra are also recommended stopovers on your wine tour. Local producers here create extraordinary wines and delicious, traditional savoury dishes to enjoy alongside them.
Steady Like the Rocks
For those couples interested in geology, you'll be able to turn your romantic holiday into a history lesson by exploring the many rock formations throughout the island - both natural and man-made. One of the most impressive is the Nuraghic Fortress of Barumini, an ancient complex consisting of one central tower surrounded by four smaller towers. You can also visit Bear Rock at Capo d’Orso, the Arco dell’Angelo just north of Cagliar, and enjoy the romance of the Valley of the Moon at Capo Testa on the northern tip of the island.
