The most effective way to save a decaying tooth is to undergo a root canal treatment. It is a method for repairing an infected tooth by removing the only damaged part and not its entirety. Compared to the old practice of extracting a tooth, this treatment is much more conservative. It restores your smile and ability to chew food without feeling any pain. However, not for everyone may be for a candidate of a root canal treatment. That's why when suffering from a tooth problem, it is always good to consult your dentist to know what treatment the best for your case is.

Some of the signs that you may need for a root canal treatment are the following:

  • Discolouration of damaged tooth
  • Swelling gums
  • S?v?r????n when chewing
  • Ex?????v???n??t?v?t? of the tooth when drinking hot and cold

Prior to the treatment, your dentist should conduct an X-ray of your teeth to locate the damage. Then, your affected tooth will be administered with local anaesthesia. After this, your dentist will create an opening called a pulpectomy to extract the damaged part. As mentioned, only the damaged part of the tooth is removed when performing root canal treatment. The pulp is then disinfected and filled with gutta-percha and sealing cement. Lastly, a crown is fitted to seal the tooth. That's how your tooth is saved.

Root canal treatments usually require at least two visits. You may have to return to your dentist so that he or she can apply a crown.

You must therefore be gentle when brushing the treated area. Take your time when brushing as well as flossing. Avoid eating crunchy and hard-to-chew type of food in the meantime; otherwise, your filling may get damaged. It is normal to experience discomfort and inflammation after the procedure. In that case, take pain relievers that your dentist may prescribe, such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

Before saying yes to a root canal treatment, make sure that your dentist has the qualification and experience to perform this procedure. Consider the dental clinic's facilities and customer service. That way, you can ensure your safety as well as convenience.
