Mystical forests and misty mountaintops have lured visitors to the Catskills since the 1600s. They are also famous for Woodstock and Hudson River School artists. So whether you like outdoorsy activities or want to get lost on a journey of art, the Catskills is the place to go. Below you will find some usual and unusual places to visit during your vacation in the Catskills.

Woodstock is a must for music lovers and you can still catch a great gig at the Colony Café. If you love beer you are also in luck, Woodstock hosts the Long Trail Brewing Co.

Want to do something a little bit different? Why not attend the Celtic festival in Hunter, held in August every year? You might even learn some Irish step dancing. No need to go to Ireland then. Just order an Irish coffee too in a local bar.

The Kaaterskill Falls is sort of a must if you're going to the Catskills. You can find plenty of hiking trails around the falls and, of course, there is nothing better than just being there and observing the waterfall. The Kaaterskill Falls is the highest cascading waterfall in NYS. Talk about a scenic spot for a picnic.

Love camping? Then North South Lake State Park is an excellent option. Here you can go hiking and fishing and why not canoeing or kayaking? Only non-motorized boats are allowed, so no worries - your relaxing vacation will not be disturbed anytime soon. There are plenty of marked hiking trails as well and a playground for the kids.

If skiing is your thing then Windham mountain is your thing. It's a great family skiing resort with plenty of activities both for kids and adults. It offers beginner-to-expert terrain, so whatever your level, you will be fine. They also have snowmaking machines, in case it's not a snowy winter. If you feel like partying there is plenty of after ski going on and if you have kids, well then there is a children's adventure park. Night skiing is also possible here. Windham mountain offers three festivals as well: Bavarian Fest, the Irish I Was Skiing/Riding Festival and the Parrothead Spring Fling Festival. With those names we will leave you guessing the themes.

Want something a little bit different? How about learning survival skills in the forest? The Agroforestry Resource Center in Acra will train you in everything from wildlife to gardening. Learn what mushrooms to pick in fall and herbs to gather in spring. Perfect if you want to learn more about camping in the wild, or are just starting your own garden.

Love fishing? Then that Catskills is the place to visit. Greene County offers a rich variety of fishing opportunities - from fly fishing in summer to ice fishing in winter. Some of the more popular destinations for fishing here include Colgate Lake (your smile will look grand in the reflection of the lake, we’re sure), Greens Lake, North-South Lake, the Hudson River, Batavia Kill, Catskill Creek, Ten Mile Creek, West Kill and Schoharie Creek & East Kill.

If you like the suggestions in this article, then you will find plenty of hotels, B&Bs and Catskills resorts where you can stay during your vacation. The Catskills are a popular destination, so you will be spoiled for choice.
