Most scenic river cruise destinations in europe
Posted: May 03, 2014
An ideal destination for scenic and diverse river cruises, Europe offers tourists numerous opportunities to explore both major cities and hidden gems from the comfort of a floating hotel barge. Not only is it a great alternative mode of transportation for touring, but also it’s a great way to enjoy a holiday in its own right. For those looking for this kind of relaxing getaway, the following countries offer some of the most picturesque landscapes and rich, storied history.
River Thames, England
When it comes to river cruises, Europe includes the most famous river in the world - the River Thames in England. Not only does it wind through the vibrant city London, it also meanders out through the stunning English countryside. Going on a River Thames cruise means getting the best of worlds: the grandeur of London alongside the quiet beauty of the villages dotted along its length. Included in typical stopovers are the village of Wallingford, where Agatha Christie once lived, the little village of Henley-on-Thames, and the charming "nook" town of Sonning, which looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale.
Scottish Waterways, Scotland
With the popularity of modern river cruises, Europe has established a whole new facet of tourism. Scotland has always had a strong culture and tradition that tourists can now discover in a very different way by cruising through the Scottish Waterways, which stretch for 137 miles. Apart from being a significant means of livelihood for many Scottish towns, the waterways also connect Scotland’s most iconic tourist attractions - such as the Duart Castle, the ancient Clava Cairns, Isles of Mull, and of course Loch Ness. More importantly, the waterways allow tourists to explore these attractions in a single journey.
Po River, Italy
Italy is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in the world. It is brimming with a rich cultural heritage that is evident in its myriad fascinating destinations. It was home to some of the world's greatest creative minds, including Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Puccini and Vivaldi. Those who want to immerse themselves in Italy’s culture and art will also enjoy what it offers in terms of its river cruises. Europe is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Black Sea, allowing for much diversity. In Italy, the longest river - the Po - contributes to the Po Valley’s unique cuisine and varied climate. When embarking on a Po River cruise, tourists will be able to visit quaint villages and remarkable cities such as Verona. But perhaps the most famous destination of all along the route is Venice, considered by many as the most romantic city in the world.
