Ethiopia, land of the origin for the very first human species, has been an interesting place to visit right from the ancient ages.

Ethiopia still maintains a Julian Calendar, where the year is divided into 12 months of 30 days each, and a 13th month of five and six days during a leap year. The Ethiopian calendar generally runs eight years behind the Gregorian calendar.

Ethiopia is the only African country with their personal numbers and alphabet letters that have its roots back to the Sabean. There are 33 letters in the Ethiopian alphabet with 7 characters. Initially, most of these alphabets are used by the priests of the Ethiopian church.

History of Ethiopia:-

The Tiya pre Historic Stalaes are located 20 KM far from Adadi Mariam, a church which originated between 12th and 15th century.

The 36 Stelae are the possible tomb stones listed among the 10 UNESCO registered Heritages in Ethiopia.

The Lalibela rock-hewn churches are found in the Last area of Wollo, which is a popular site among the 11 remarkable churches, which has been built by King Lalibela in the late 12th century. These notable structures are considered among the wonders of the world. Each of these churches is unique and is decorated with incredible rock paintings.

The Simien Mountain Massif is also among the 10 UNESCO Registered Heritages in Ethiopia. It is found 20 KM north east of Gondar. It encompasses an area of 179 sq km at an average height of 3300m. You will find some unique wild animals here. Different kinds of birds are also found in this area.

The Walled City of Harar is known for its holy shrines and minarets. Along with an incredible architecture, it has strong old walls and dense, known as the Gate of Harar. The most incredible thing here is the fierce hyenas.

Ethiopia is also considered as the land of runners. The Olympic champion Abebe Bikila got double gold medals in Tokyo Olympic and then Mexico Olympic in 1968. Honestly, the men from Ethiopia dominate the men’s long distance race across the world. Haile Gebresiassie has double Olympic victories for successive world championship titles in 10,000 meters and 17 world records.

The idea of The Great Ethiopian Run is a race which has garnered appreciation all around the world. People have immense fun participating in these races. It also enhances the band of friendship among people, which leads to good bonding and a social awareness about the sport.
