Red bricks have been the most commonly used building materials for centuries, but technological advancements have led to the development of light weight bricks to serve as alternatives to them. Autoclaved aerated concrete is a good example of a lightweight building material that you can use for your next project if you are looking to improve your construction process and impact on the environment. Like red bricks, these lightweight alternatives are durable and versatile for building walls, but you need to make sure that you are getting high-quality materials that will increase the lifespan and durability of your structure. Here are the things you need to know about picking lightweight blocks and bricks:

  • What they are made of and how they are made – A lightweight AAC brick is made of fly-ash, a waste product from steel manufacturing. Producing a brick requires around 30 less energy compared to what is required in clay brick manufacturing. This way, their production has minimal impact on the environment, with minimal carbon emissions.

  • Cost and labour for installation – Make sure that the light weight bricks are cost-effective and environmentally friendly to manufacture and that they are energy efficient to install. AAC blocks are easy to work with, as you can use common cutting and drilling tools, and they are easy to lay due to their bigger size, so you only need a few blocks per installation. This means a reduction in the amount of masonry work, and a quicker time to finish the project.
  • Fire and earthquake resistance – High-quality autoclaved aerated concrete can withstand fire and meets the stringent fire safety requirements. Its excellent thermal insulation ensures resistance against extreme heat and frost conditions. This feature further adds to the material’s energy efficiency when it contributes to keeping your structure cool during hot days, and warm in cold days. Insulation should be effective enough to provide soundproofing, too.

  • Pest resistance – Good light weight bricks should be free of organic content, which is typically responsible for pest infestation and mould growth.
  • High strength – Ideally, the compressive strength should be in the range of 3.5 to 4N/m2. AAC light weight bricks are able to meet this requirement.
