PMP(Project Management Professional) and PRINCE 2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) are the most recognized and debatable project management certifications in the world. Here we will analyze which certification should one go for according to their needs. PMP(Project Management Professional): Pmp is offered by PMI that is US based body. It is one of the most reputed certificates for the project managers around the world. Many industries and companies have made it compulsory for their project managers to attain PMP certification as it covers "generally-accepted" knowledge and principles of project management. Therefore, it has applications in managing all kinds of projects. That means, it is not industry specific which gives it the best advantage. PMP gives you knowledge and skills which are necessary for successful project management and delivery.

Features of PMP:

It is revealing of your know-how in using the PMBOK

Authenticates your knowledge of generically best practices and principles of project management.

PMP describes "How to do it":

  • A broad collection of generally-accepted ‘best practices’
  • Each topic area can be mentioned to in separation
  • Targeted at project managers only
  • Covers social skills
  • Describes techniques
PMP defines how to go about scheduling PRINCE 2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments):

Prince2 is a project management practice which was formulated for UK’s government projects and was retained by the UK's Cabinet Office. Now, PRINCE2 is owned by AXELOS, a new joint venture corporation in the UK. PRINCE2 certification has three levels:

  1. PRINCE2 Foundation (It is basic level and easy to pass)
  2. PRINCE2 Practitioner (It is moderate level)
  3. PRINCE2 Professional (It is expert level)

PRINCE2 describes "What to Do": o A Method o Combined set of procedures and themes casing the full project lifecycle o Covers all project management roles – comprising the project board, project manager, team managers, project assurance and support o Does not cover interpersonal skills o Makes reference to techniques – e.g. suggests that when scheduling activities, Gantt charts might be useful, but does not tell you how to draw one.

Conclusion: PRINCE2's requirement method is - get competent to practice while the PMP exam has a lot of experience and teaching pre-requisites. So the tactic there is practice then get competent - a little more like becoming commissioned in your vocation. So don't take the numbers, above, as an sign that one is 'better' than the other - that's asking the wrong question. Think of them as tools available to the project managers - sometimes one is a better fit than the other, but we keep them all in our bag for the day when we need them. Generally, when we speak of PRNICE 2 it is referred to PRINCE 2 Foundation and/or PRINCE2 Practitioner. PRINCE 2 Professional is a bit rare and very less no. of people has attained it. PMP more related to the knowledge and skills essential to successfully manage a project and its delivery where as PRINCE2 is attentive mainly on the processes and the framework to successfully implement the project. Hence for experienced project managers PMP is better suited and for other professionals like Project engineers and Project directors, PRINCE 2 seem to be a better choice. If you are looking for any questions related to training or preparation for these certification exams, please send me a message. PRINCE2 and PMP are kind of complementary methodologies.
