How Prosthetic Leg Concept Enables Amputees to Sense

Prosthetic leg or limbs have in research since past decades. A surgical technique devised by MIT researchers have allowed to work on a technology like this which is very much similar to natural limbs. With the help of muscle joint and feedback from already existing nerves and amputees would also be able to sense where the artificial limb are in space and feel how much force is being applied to them. It is a type of system that could help in reducing the rate at which patients decide not to get the limb implant.

What concern the professor of media arts and sciences Hugh Herr says as they are talking about theatrical improvement in patient care. He adds in the year 2017 the research was not that updated as there have been no healthy neural method for person using prosthetic after limb got removed by trauma, surgery or medical illness so as to sense where limb is in space or require forces that will enable to feel. After that when new study was conducted in science robotics it was demonstrated that the technique used in rats generates sensory reaction from muscles and tendons to the nervous system that will be able to convey information about the prosthetic limb position and forces applied to it.

After a successful experiment on rat the plan to implement on humans amputees. The surgery with the intention of restoring physical basis of an individual personality and body sense of its own situation and movement. How muscles control the limb movement is in pair known as agnoist-antagonist. In this one muscle stretches when other contract and together they send muscle pairs which are served in a conventional amputation as people who uses the artificial limb don't have way of sensing where limbs are actually placed.

Even after the muscles are being severed the nerves that sent signal to the transplanted limb remain unbroken in many amputees. Surviving nerves are key to new system as they are connected to muscle pairs which is implanted to other part of body and to control system. The lab owned by Herr's has included microprocessor that will interpret the nerve signal to instructions in order to observe the moving feature of the prosthetic limb.

When the brain sends signal to the instructed limb as to move one of the implanted muscles will contract and its agonist, which is chemical that binds to a receptor in order to produce biological response it will extend and providing the neural feedback that will actually allow limb to be felt in space.

With the framework being used the patient will not have to think about how to control their non-natural limb, Herr says. When a patient imagines moving the unnoticed limb, signals will be sent via nerves to the surgically constructed muscle pairs. The implanted pairs electrodes will then sense these signals for the control of synthetic motors in the external prosthetics.
