During our everyday lives, we have many aspects that help us to deliver the needful or assist us achieving our day to day objectives. One aspect that has helped mankind since time immemorial is an edge. From the dawn of civilization man or humans were extensively engaged with three main activities to survive: Hunting, fishing and fighting (as a defence). All these activities were successfully done with aid of edge. We have not been endowed by nature with sharp teeth, claws or the agility of the perfect hunter of the wild. Despite these lacunae, we had one advantage – The Edge. It all started with a piece of rock which was ground and sharpened into a tool. Ensuring survival and gaining supremacy perhaps mankind's most important invention has been that of the edge and not the wheel. Personal grooming too necessitates the use of tools which require the "Edge". Tools like scissors shears, barber scissors, and straight razors are the most important tools that come handy when cutting hair, shaving.

Before we delve into understanding the sharpening and maintenance of these grooming tools or if you would, hair styling paraphernalia, it is best in our interest to understand the different types of blades for hair cutting. So what different types of blade exist to assist us in hair cutting? In the broad sense of there are two types of barber scissors. One type is of beveled edge and the other type is of convex edge. The choice of the blades is dependent on what kind of stage you are in your career in, what sort of style you are comfortable or expert in, what kind of clientele you handle the most, and of course, the most important aspect is that affordability factor. The aforesaid factors are applicable in case of straight razors.

Speaking of beveled edged blades, a mixture of several /a few metals makes sit lightweight. So if you are in the initial stages if your career, this sort of barber scissors is the best thing for you. This is because the blades are micro-serrated and theses sort blades are mostly manufactured in European. These blades have the capability of arresting the hair and prevent it from sliding down the blades. These sorts of barber scissors are also best for detailed and gradual cutting of hair. However beveled edged scissors aren't good for slicing cuts, as the hair will get stuck on the blades and prevent from maneuverability. But still, slice cutting can be done with scissor shears, which comes with polished beveled edges. Further, a lot of other cuts can be accommodated as well.

The other type of blades are the convex blades other words for is Japanese style blades. These are the sharpest blades available. Straight razors are normally fashioned with this kind of the edge. For straight razors, it is recommended that honing and stropping should be performed before first use. The process should be repeated afterward as well.
