Many people’s idea of the ultimate Peru trek is reaching heights of Machu Picchu, and it’s not surprising. The ancient city is one of the world’s historical and archaeological wonders and is included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But due to the number of visitors, both local and international, who wish to traverse the famous Inca Trail, the Peruvian government has limited the number of people allowed on the trail to only 200 trekkers per day. But those who are visiting the Sacred Valley of the Incas needn't to despair that they might miss out. There are other sites nearby that are worth trekking to for a full day's experience.

Soccma

This is an ideal starting location for a Peru trek. It’s a relatively easy and extremely enjoyable hike, especially for those who are looking to kill time before they try their luck on the Inca Trail. The starting point is only 40 minutes from the town of Ollantaytambo, where Inca Trail hikers usually converge before going on their week-long hike. Some of the best reasons to go on a Soccma trek are the archaeological ruins you will pass, such as the Naupa Iglesia, which rarely gets visited but is extremely interesting.

Inti Punku

The trail to Inti Punku is one of the more strenuous routes in Peru. Trek uphill through the Quarries first, and then continue on for another two hours until you arrive at Inti Punku. Despite the challenge of these adventures, it is extremely rewarding when you finally arrive at the location to see various archaeological ruins scattered (although often well hidden) throughout the trail. You should be fairly fit to embark on this journey, as it is a steady uphill climb and takes several hours. However, some guides offer horses for the ascent.

Las Canteras - The Quarries In reality, it will take only four to five hours reach The Quarries, but the journey itself may seem rather long and challenging due to the steepness of the trails. Nonetheless, these trails will lead you to wonderful Incan ruins that trekkers don’t normally get to see, including some Incan mummies. Moreover, knowledgeable guides will be able to point you other areas of interest and regale you with traditional stories, all of which will make the trek more fun and bearable. Another great reward for those brave enough to visit Las Canteras is the majestic view of the mountain, Veronica, and the town of Ollantaytambo below. This particular Peru trek typically culminates with a high altitude lunch before heading back to Ollantaytambo.
