JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint are removed and replaced with a metal, plastic or ceramic device called prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint.

Your doctor generally recommends total joint replacement, nonsurgical treatments like medications, physical therapy do not relieve your pain and disability.

Types of Joint Replacement

  • Hip Replacement
  • Knee Replacement
  • Shoulder Replacement

Surgical Procedure

Total joint replacement surgery takes a few hours. The procedure is performed in a hospital or outpatient surgery center.

During the surgery, the damaged cartilage and bone is removed from your joint and replaced with prosthetic components made of metal, plastic, or ceramic.

There are some complications in surgery. Common complications are infection, blood clots, nerve injury, and prosthesis problems like loosening or dislocation.

  • Hip Replacement:

The hip is one of the body's largest joints. It is a ball-and-socket joint. The socket is formed by the acetabulum, which is part of the large pelvis bone. The ball is the femoral head, which is the upper end of the femur (thighbone).

Whenever your hip has been damaged by arthritis, a fracture, or other conditions, Your hip may be stiff and common activities such as walking or getting in and out of a chair may be painful and difficult.

In a total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty), the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with prosthetic components.

  • Knee Replacement:

The knee is made up of the lower end of the thighbone (femur), the upper end of the shinbone (tibia), and the kneecap (patella). The most common cause of chronic knee pain and disability is arthritis. Most knee pain is caused by just three types: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.

A knee replacement (also called knee arthroplasty) might be more accurately termed a knee "resurfacing" because only the surface of the bones are actually replaced.

  • Shoulder Replacement:

Your shoulder is made up of three bones: your upper arm bone (humerus), your shoulder blade (scapula), and your collarbone (clavicle). The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint: The ball, or head, of your upper arm bone fits into a shallow socket in your shoulder blade. This socket is called the glenoid.

In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the shoulder are removed and replaced with artificial components, called a prosthesis.
