Barging holidays are the perfect way to explore an area. There is no better way to travel than along a peaceful waterway on wide beam boats as they meander through stunning countryside and historic towns. But just where are the best places to go on an adventure like this? There are many destinations in Europe that may tempt you, but here are some of the best.

Belgium

Belgium is a small but very diverse country that is culturally rich and is, in fact, the ideal destination for leisurely cruises on wide beam boats. The very fact the country is so small means you can see more of it on a single cruise. You may want to explore Flanders in the north of Belgium, and there are many waterways in this area. You can also alight in stunning medieval cities like Antwerp and Bruges, to explore the historic attractions and the stunning scenery.

Germany

Germany is another top destination for cruises, especially through the Moselle region. This area is famous all over the world for its wine, the most famous of which is made from the Riesling grape. Travel through the region along the River Moselle and you will find yourself surrounded by picturesque vineyards growing on steep slopes on either side. You will also pass ancient villages and castles, which you can explore at your leisure.

Holland

Travelling on wide beam boats through the waterways of Holland is the perfect way to see the country. The best place to head is the west of the country, where you will pass through fields of colourful bulbs, glide past tall windmills and stop off in famous cities like Rotterdam, where many cultural treasures await.

Italy

Italy is the ideal European destination for barging. The scenery here is very diverse, and you may well feel as if you are getting more than one holiday in the same trip as you travel along ancient trade routes and discover historic towns.

Scotland

The Highlands of Scotland provide one of the most stunning areas to explore by barge in Europe. With lochs, rivers, castles and more, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful countryside wherever you go. And, of course, you will also be able to stop off on your cruise to sample some of the best whisky in the world!

The above destinations are just some of the most popular options for those who want to experience travel on wide beam boats to some of the most picturesque places in Europe.
