Posted: Sep 21, 2018
There are many certifications available in the IT industry. They are offered by various companies and often times there is overlap in information and skill set requirements. So how do you know what certifications are desirable when looking for a job in computer technology? How can you be sure which certifications pay off? Here's a list of my top five certifications that will actually help you land that dream IT job.
1. CompTIA A+CompTIA A+ certification is a tremendous asset to someone just starting out in the IT world. Having this certification shows employers that you know the basics about computer hardware, networking and security, operating systems and troubleshooting. It also shows you have relevant communication skills necessary to become an entry-level IT professional. Many large companies, including HP, Microsoft and Intel require the A+ certificate for entry-level placement, making this certificate the most valuable for IT newcomers. To get the CompTIA A+ certification, you must pass two exams: the A+ Essentials and the A+ Practical Application. This certification used to be life-long, but now requires retesting every three years to ensure knowledge stays relevant and up-to-date.2. MCITP: SharePoint 2010 AdministratorMCITP (Microsoft Certified IT Professional) exams are also highly regarded in the IT industry. The SharePoint 2010 Administrator certification is meant for a more seasoned IT professional and is ideal for people with two or more years of experience with SharePoint configuration, Windows Server 2008 (or later), and networking infrastructure services. Professionals seeking this accreditation should have experience in administering, managing, upgrading, monitoring and designing SharePoint servers. They should also have a thorough understanding of Windows PowerShell scripting, DNS and IIS, server performance and server security.Like the CompTIA A+ certification, the SharePoint 2010 Administrator certification requires two exams that have been revamped as of January 2012. This highly advanced, very specific IT certification shows you are qualified as a top-level server administrator, and currently SharePoint job opportunities are out there for the taking.3. MCPD: SharePoint 2010 DeveloperThe MCPD (Microsoft Certified Professional Developer) SharePoint 2010 Developer certification is another great credential for more advanced computer professionals, specifically developers with at least two years of SharePoint experience. Developers can make or break new technologies and currently for Microsoft, SharePoint developers are in great demand. This MCPD certification tests the candidate's knowledge and skills on designing and implementing custom code for applications deployed on SharePoint servers. All MCPD certifications allow you access to exclusive resources from Microsoft, which can help fast-track your projects and even your career.4. (ISC)2 CISSP(ISC)2 stands for the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc., a global leader in information security education. The CISSP Course & Certification is considered the highest industry certification demonstrating knowledge in network security. This is a highly advanced certification, and candidates looking to gain this accreditation should have a strong background in networking and security. This certification is a must for professionals in networking and security as there are many large companies and government agencies in need of security experts and they are willing to pay a premium. As a side note, if you are new to the security and networking realm, check out CompTIA's Security+ certification, as it is a great certificate for entry-level positions.5. Microsoft SQL Server CertificationsSQL (Structured Query Language) is essential for database administration. These are an advanced set of certifications and often are required for those who install, configure and secure databases. Specifically, administrators are often tasked with evaluating the performance of the SQL Server by implementing partitions and index tuning. Additionally, high availability strategies like Database Mirroring, Log Shipping and Clustering are included in administrators' responsibilities. Database administrators are typically employed by mid-sized to large-sized organizations.Certifications are especially important in today's economy. By staying current on your certifications you demonstrate up to date knowledge on specific technical subjects. This indicates to a potential employer that you bring standardized skill sets and reduce their need for on the job training.
