Beauty maybe more than skin deep, but its the looks that makes the first impression. Johnny Piot is an artisan specialised in the production of high quality leathers. He handcrafts every single piece, for Noreve using meticulous skills to produce the patina effect that is oh so beautiful. Let's look at the how the handiwork of these craftsmen produce such stunning pieces.

Elegance made by passing time

Patina is the tarnish produced by oxidation or other chemical processes usually found on metals, rocks and wood. Leather aficionados often use this effect to produce the soothing effect on goods and accessories. The beauty of this effect, is that it just improves over time and is quite aesthetically pleasing. It has been used most commonly in restoring antiques/statues. Carbon steel blades sometimes force a patina onto the blade to help protect it. However the most elegant i found it used was in leather.

How does a patina develop on leather?

Leather is a natural material and it can age gracefully. It is a soft sheen that develops on the surface of the leather. This imparts a certain sense of character & personality to it. Naturally developed patina takes time after-all, good things come to those who wait. Hence, leather craftsmen often work things along with their mastery and skills.Leathers with a natural finish are ideally suited to develop great looking patina. It can also develop on most types of leathers, however chrome-dyed leather and patent leathers resist the longest.

Developing ageing at Noreve

We start off with a regular iPhone Xs case in grained leather. Our craftsmen get started with the edges and scrub them to smoothness with brushes. This creates a smoothing effect that feels like a comfortable product instead of a brand new one that may feel jagged at the edges. This scrubbing also fades the colour to a more soothing shade compared to the brighter colour that forms the base of the cover. This can remove the grainy texture in certain areas, but that is the intention to start with.

Once the edges have the desired effect, we move to the latches and other parts including the inside of the case. A once over with a bigger brush is then provided to match different parts of the case.

The tools of the trade usually include various types of thick brushes, that do not harm the leather. The skills and know-how of craftsmen with extensive can lend a touch of sophistication which makes your phone case a highly coveted and unique fashion accessory.
