Accademia Gallery Tourist Guide

Without a doubt Galleria dell'Accademia is most famous for its jaw-dropping giant marble sculptures by the great Renaissance artist, Michelangelo.

It is a must visit attraction in Florence to explore Michelangelo's work, particularly his masterpiece "Statue of David".

General Information

Millions of visitors visit Accademia Gallery every year and during Summers it is always full of rush crowd.

Accademia is a compact museum and you can cover everything in an hour.

To access museum you have to purchase a ticket either from ticket counter or from online platforms.

When to go?

Accademia Gallery generally seems to be always crowded during summers so best time to visit is early in the morning when museum opens.

Another best time to go late in the evening before the museum shuts down but during this period you wont able to explore much because of closing hours.

If you want to explore things in Accademia Gallery on your own pace then winters is the best season to come. No crowd, no long queues and you will find everything cheaper in the city.

Museum is always full of visitors, so we strongly recommend you to Book your tickets in advance via online platform.

If you want to purchase tickets from Ticket Office then reserve the tickets the day before early in the afternoon where you will find short queues.

Some Facts about Accademia Gallery

Famous David structure had been installed at Palazzo Vecchio but later on it was shifted to Galleria dell'Accademia in 1873.

Made from one single marble block, Michelangelo David sculpture stands 17 feet tall.

Department of Musical Instruments was included to Accademia Gallery collection in 1900. It also holds the oldest preserved piano in the world.

David Sculpture was first supposed to be on Cathedral of Florence, way up on the side of the cathedral where he would seen very small and due to this the idea was canceled. Committee of 30 member meeting was held for the conclusion of placement for this masterpiece and after a long discussion it was decided that statue will be placed in Piazza della Signoria, a political heart of Florence.

Michelangelo was only 26 when order was passed to him for making David’s sculpture and he constantly worked for over 2 years to create this masterpiece.
