5 Common Mistakes Made While Writing An Exam
Posted: May 06, 2014
Introduction
Examinations were introduced in the college and school courses to understand the skill set of the individual. However, when the students face examinations, they are mostly tensed and stressed out from the previous cramming sessions. What makes it worse is the ad hoc tension by the teachers, guardians and parents to always perform well, this leads to creation of more stress, which further leads to the students making some common mistakes. The idea of this article is to provide the student with an idea of the common mistakes that can be committed and ensuring that they do not make it when writing their exams again.
Answering a question twice
This is one of the most common mistakes where the students answer the question twice. Some of the questions are numbered in a tricky manner which leads to repeat questioning. Since the student is in a hurry to finish, he or she wastes their time to complete the same again. This means that when beginning to answer the question, keeping a track of the numbers is important to avoid this mistake. The easiest way is to checkmark the question once done.
There are times when one has to answer 5 questions out of ten, most students also go ahead and does six, if the time permits. But this should be avoided and only 5 questions be answered.
Leaving an answer blank
Sometimes the students’ thinks that they want do one section of the question later and so leaves it blank. However, the time gets over and the student submits the paper. The answer is still left blank and the student loses the answer. What the student should do is to answer all questions numerically but if they are unaware of an answer, they should immediately keep a check of the time and go back whenever they can. The best tip is to mark the question paper that will help the student to keep a track of the number that is not completed.
Preparing for an inappropriate chapter
This is done by most students- they prepare for the chapters that were not included in the syllabi of the exams. This means that students should double check their syllabi with friends and teachers as any time wasted is inappropriate.
Not following directions
Due to the tension and stress, the students forgets to read about the directions. Some exams are very particular and need the students to follow them and therefore the students should dedicate few minutes in understanding the instructions strictly. For example, when the student is asked to answer five questions and not six, it will be mentioned in the direction and it will be best to follow them to the tee.
Ignoring the clock
Lastly, most students do not time themselves or practice solving the questions within the allocated time, these results in ignoring the clock and unanswered questions making the students lose on their marks. It is important to keep a track of the time that one needs to answer a question and thereby include only that much. This is important as ignoring the clock will lose the students their important grades as they will not have enough time to complete it.
Conclusion
Examinations is usually stressful time, however, if the student has been diligent and prepared ahead, he or she will never lose out, be stress free and thereby complete their papers on time.
