Someone hair loss is always taken as men’s dominion. Interestingly, just as men women can also suffer hair loss because of hormone changes and other factors. Well, balding and thinning of hair is more embarrassing for women, the condition is largely treatable.

Not only that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology almost half of the American women experience hair fall by the age of 50. Previously, hair loss is dismissed as a minor cosmetic problem but now researchers are recognizing that for women with hair loss problem can have serious problems causing them to have low self-esteem and quality of life.

This is why it is important to address the problem of hair loss in women.

Cause of Hair Thinning Among Women

In women, the hair loss can be caused by a number of factors ranging from hormone fluctuations to using cosmetic products and appliances. Major caused by hair loss also known as alopecia that affects women include:

Hormones

Androgenetic alopecia which is also known as pattern baldness is triggered by the hormone DHT or dihydrotestosterone. A derivative of the male hormone testosterone, DHT attacks the hair follicles reducing their size and causing hair loss. As compared to men, women have a lot less testosterone and this is why they are less susceptible to hair loss. But menopause can trigger hormonal changes in women causing hair loss. Oral contraceptives are also found to trigger hair loss in women.

Stress

A number of factors like surgery, childbirth, malnutrition and other stress can cause hair loss by a handful. This condition is known as telogen effluvium. Marital status is also found to be playing a role as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons researchers found that married women experience less hair fall than women with no spouse either because of divorce or death.

Androgen index

Hormone injections, progestin implants, and other such invasive substances can cause hair loss in women. This is why women are advised to use oral contraceptives with a low androgen index to avoid hair loss. Women with a history of hair loss should use non-hormonal birth control.

Other than these factors autoimmune disorders, chemotherapy, and several hairstyles can also cause hair loss.

Hair Loss Treatments

Good news is there are several treatments available for thinning hair and hair loss. Depending on your condition, your doctor can advise you one or more of the following treatments:

Testosterone-blocking drugs

As women near menopause, there is a decrease in levels of estrogen as compared to testosterone. Drugs that are geared towards blocking the increasing testosterone at the hair follicle can help in treating the hair loss.

Rogaine

The only FDA approved treatment for female pattern baldness, Rogaine is an over-the-counter drug which works by stimulating new hair growth.

Other than these topical cortisone, laser phototherapy, hair transplantation are some other options to deal with hair loss for women.

Dr. James S. Pendergraft opened the Orlando Women's Center in March 1996 to provide a full range of health care for women.
