Latest Safety Tips for Online Shopping on Websites

Everyone who has a personal computer and a working connection to the internet knows a thing or two about online shopping. Pages such as eBay and amazon.com are the most popular go-to websites in India for people looking for all kinds of products. All it takes is a few clicks, and you can choose from a wide range of products, even the rare ones around your area that you would normally spend hours looking for. The payment is instant, the shipping is fast… Almost everything about buying products online is appealing.

However, as the popularity of online shopping grows bigger each day, more and more false shopping websites are starting to pop up as well. That is where the danger comes in. How exactly do you know if the website you are shopping at is not a scam? How do you know you are not being tricked by false advertisers and handing over all your personal data to the wrong people?

Here are a few useful tips to help you determine and pick out the fake sites from the genuine ones for safe online shopping on E-commerce sites.

1. Stick to established and secure websites. It is usually the best choice to go to the well-known and popular sites for your online shopping experiences. Online shopping websites in India that have the most traffic include (but are not limited to) Flipkart, eBay, YepMe.com, Amazon, Quikr, Olx, and Myntra.

Usually, secure websites have domain names that begin with https instead of http This is a sign that the site has an installed SSL or secure sockets layer encryption. This helps secure confidential content and information submitted by users, such as your credit card number.

2. Be vigilant. Make sure to check for small details that tell the difference between what is safe and what is not. Grammatical errors and misspellings are big signs of untrustworthy online marketplaces. Genuine sites pay careful attention to their sentences and almost always have high quality layouts and designs that are clean to look at. Scams, on the other hand, mostly have sloppy layouts with pixelated pictures and mistakes in grammar and syntax.

Whatever is true for real-life shopping is usually the same for online shopping. If you can use your common sense to sense scams by shady door-to-door salesmen, you can do the same for shady websites. There are always sales that are too good to be true. Watch out for these promos.

  1. Build a strong defense. Your computer should be ready for any attacks should you continue scouring the internet for safe places to purchase goods. Make sure your antivirus protection is up to date, and set up solid firewall and other trustworthy anti-malware software.
  2. Be cautious. Do not just willingly share everything on the internet. Trust your intuition and instincts. If something is bugging you about a website, it is best not to jump in at once and give your credit card information to just anyone. If a field is not required then please do not fill it. Actually required fields are usually marked with an asterisk. The less information you share, the better.

As much as possible, don’t use a computer at an outside internet shop to make your transactions. Use your home or personal computer. If you really have no other option and have to use an outside computer, make sure to clean it of all your information or else your personal details will be available to anyone else with access to that computer.

5. Do not be lazy when asked to provide a password. Never use common and easily remembered passwords such as 123456 or your last name. The most reliable online shopping websites usually have a password strength checker to tell you if your password is secure enough. Usually, a combination of letters, numbers, and at least one capital letter is the hardest to crack.
