Abrasive wheels are extensively used in many industries for various purposes such as grinding machines. The improper use of abrasive wheels often causes serious accidents leading to injuries and/or damage to properties in a construction site. There are many do's and don'ts to keep each and every employee safe when they deal with abrasive wheels during their work. The most common accidents due to the careless use are the following:

Steps involved in Selection of Wheels to avoid accidents

  • Instead of selecting a random one consult a manufacturer for the proper type of wheels to suit a particular job. Soft wheels are more fit for hard materials and hard wheels for soft materials.

  • Do not use defective or damaged wheels for work.

  • Always the wheels should be kept dry and not displayed to extreme temperatures. If not in use, they should be stored properly in suitable and separate racks.

Safety steps to avoid accidents in the work site:

  • Always check all wheels for any damage or cracks before working with it.

  • Make sure the operating speed of the machine does not exceed the speed of the provided wheel

  • Always handle and maintain the wheels in a careful manner.

  • Make sure that the wheel hole fits machine arbor properly and the flanges are clean, flat, and proper type and size for the wheel you are mounting.

  • Always remember not to use wheels which have been damaged or otherwise damaged.
