Exploring the Local Region on Holidays in Tuscany
Posted: May 14, 2014
For many years, holidays in Tuscany have attracted the discerning traveller searching for that something a little bit special. Many would agree the region has, in abundance, the makings of a perfect break. The stunning countryside, dotted with incredible villas and charming villages, rolling hills carpeted with vineyards and olive groves, glorious cities full of history and art, and a cuisine that rivals any other in the world make holidays in Tuscany extremely appealing.
The region lies at the heart of Italy and many believe it is the true soul of this wonderful country. Its history is vividly remembered in its city streets, buildings and architecture, and the customs that have been the backbone of the province still hold strong today. People here are rightly proud of their heritage and when you talk to the locals you will soon see they are more than hospitable; their warm, friendly nature welcomes you with open arms, and it is easy to see how the values of family and community have stood the test of time here.
Charming Tuscan Towns
If you enjoy driving around exploring when you are holiday, you've come to the right place! The country roads are quiet and picturesque and there are plenty of small local towns bursting with places of interest. The southern part of the region is home to many such towns, each one different and full of its own character.
PienzaPienza, famous for its pecorino cheese, is definitely worth a stop. Apart from the many cheese shops, the town itself is pure picture postcard. There are wonderful views from the town walls and this is a lovely place to stop for lunch.
San Gimignano
San Gimignano is a little more on the tourist trail but still should not be by-passed. Immediately recognisable by its 13 towers emerging from its already lofty hilltop location, this little town is packed with history and is easy to explore on foot. You can climb the main tower, where you will be treated to wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. San Gimignano is also very famous for its white wine, Vernacchia. Vineyards are dotted around the area and there is plenty of opportunity for wine tasting, which is definitely something that should be included on the itinerary of any holidays in Tuscany.
Montalcino and Montepulciano
Two other main wine towns in the area are Montalcino and Montepulciano, both stunning places to spend a few hours. Montalcino dates back to Etruscan times, as do many Tuscan towns, and interestingly takes its name from a variety of oak tree that once dominated the terrain. Montapucliano is a medieval town, famous for its food and wine production. Especially well known for its pork, cheese, ‘pici’ pasta and lentils, it is also frequented because of its Vino Nobile; the world-renowned wine that many believe to be Italy’s best.
