This gas flows into the space between the piston and the cylinder head.

If the outlet hose has a lower pressure, the gas will flow out into it or to whatever it is connected. The flow only stops when there is an equilibrium in the pressure, once the opening valve pressures are taken into account.

Once the booster is started, the piston withdraws back into the cylinder to increase the volume between them. This reduces the pressure and the gas flows into the inlet port. The piston moves in the direction of the cylinder head, on the return cycle, and decreases the volume to compress the gas till the pressure is above the outlet line pressure. That is the point at which that gas begins flowing out of the outlet valve.
