Three-quarters of Austria is surrounded by the Alps, which means that there are numerous mountain trails to explore in the country through different types of guided hiking tours. Because of its location, Austria's temperature all-year round also makes it a wonderful holiday destination for travellers who want to explore on foot to see superb and remote lakes, glaciers, and snowfields. The terrain of the country varies and there are simple hikes through low-lying areas, while adventurous types may enjoy a more challenging and rugged option of walking. Austria has some amazing places that the hiking enthusiast will not want to miss - starting with the following.

Ischgl

Aside from the popular summer activities of hiking and walking, Austria is perhaps best known for being a major skiing destination through the winter months. The town of Ischgl, located in Tyrol, is one of the most visited ski areas in the country, however the charm of the town doesn't go away when the snow melts. In the warmer months, Ischgl becomes a more low-key destination, allowing for tourists to relax and enjoy exploring the town, roaming around the streets to check out the cafes that host weekly band concerts. Moreover, hikers will enjoy the challenge of conquering the 3,000-metre-high peaks.

Galtür

If you want to expand your options before actually choosing a particular place to really get in to walking, Austria has many villages to check out first. Located just nearby Ischgl is the village of Galtür, which boasts an altitude of 1,584 metres. What makes Galtür so charming is that despite its short distance from Ischgl, it is a quieter holiday location. It has lush sprawling pastures, more than 300 kilometres of walking trails, and a dependable cable-car system that is accessible from even the farthest areas in the valley. This means that if you decide to spend the day on the mountain trails you can get back to your hotel easily.

Obergurgl

Located in the country's highest parish, Obergurgl is a perfect blend of serenity and adventure. With miles of marked paths on which various tours converge, walkers will find it easier to choose a trail suited for their level skills. For instance, there are extensive paths to viewing platforms from where you can enjoy a view of the glaciers, and there are also more challenging hiking trails for those who want to test their endurance and stamina. Furthermore, there are gentler paths that allow travellers to stroll along the river going to Zwieselstein and relax by the waterfalls.

These options all display the beauty of guided walking: Austria is so diverse it has something for everyone – enabling anybody to enjoy the country's nature and culture.
