Enjoying the Perfect Mediterranean Break on Menorca
Posted: May 22, 2014
Ever wanted to explore the exceptional Spanish Balearic region? Are you wondering whether a Menorca vacation might be just what you're looking for? If you're struggling to make a decision, these tips and facts about the area may tip the scales for you.
The location
As one of the Balearic Islands, in Spain, this lovely location offers the very best aspects of the Mediterranean. Although smaller than Majorca or Ibiza, the island boasts more beaches than the other two combined. So, naturally, sea, sun and sand are a big part of the culture here - but that’s not just a question of swimming and sunbathing. There are numerous tiny harbours and coves to explore and a great coastal pathway around the entire island. It also means that you’ll get some great local seafood and the chance to do some fishing, sailing and whatever else takes your fancy.
Another bonus is the comparatively short flight from UK airports – so you’ll avoid spending the first few days getting over the exhaustion of your journey.
The holiday culture
The traditional Menorcan culture is quite different to that of Majorca or Ibiza. It has been influenced by numerous civilizations over the millennia including, for around 100 years during the 18th and early 19th centuries, that of the UK.
In terms of the holiday culture on Menorca, vacation experiences are quite different to those on the mainland of Spain or one of its sister islands. The authorities here have never really permitted mass tourism development with its associated high-rises. That means it’s smaller and more homely in its feel. Yes, there is a certain bustle and energy in the island's two largest towns (Mahon and Ciutadella), but overall, holidaymakers will find a quieter existence and perhaps a more authentic Balearic culture than they might be able to find on other islands around Menorca. Vacation accommodation abounds and one of the most popular ways to enjoy a holiday is to rent a local villa.
Nightlife
In the two bigger towns mentioned above, you’ll find a good range of nightlife ‘hotspots’, but in most of the resorts it’ll be a little more subdued. Typically, the resorts on the island are modest in size terms, at least by the standards of Majorca, Ibiza and mainland Spain. So, expect to find some great restaurants, quiet bars and a few laid-back discos or clubs – often in some of the larger hotels. What you usually won’t find though is the ‘excess’ culture that permeates some nightlife elsewhere in the Med. That’s something you’ll either like or not, but most visitors to the island come here for exactly that reason.
Accommodation
The island has its fair share of hotels but, on the whole, most are relatively modestly sized (though there are some exceptions). Villas here are a big thing and have been since the 1960s. Holidaymakers who enjoy a more independent type of holiday will welcome that – and some are situated in truly spectacular locations.
