driverless cars

Technology is seeing most amazing innovations since past decades. You can find multiple articles written on social media about artificial intelligence, robots, chatbots, machine learning, augmented reality, virtual reality, internet of things, etc.

In the current technology market, driverless cars are popping their heads up. Though the concept is not new to IT world, the recent innovations have brought revolutionary changes in the basic concept.

Many famous brands like Tesla and Google are investing billions of dollars in driverless cars. The first ever autonomous car prototype was operated by Google in the year 2015. It is predicted that by the year 2050 almost all vehicles on the routes will be autonomous.

90 percent of accidents on roadways take place due to human errors. More than 19 automobile and parts developing companies are creating driverless cars.

The list of benefits of driverless cars is endless. Let us learn in detail about driverless cars.

As per a report, self-driving cars can add revenue of 7 trillion US dollars to the global economy. No wonder big brands are investing in such technology. A self-driving car can reduce the risk of drunk and drive cases around the globe.

A large number of road accidents take place due to drunk and drive cases.

There won’t be any age limit to use the cars. To drive a car, the driver should be above 18 and must possess a legal license. Without a license and appropriate age, the driver cannot drive the car. But with the use of self-driving cars, even minors can use cars without any help from parents.

With an increasing global population, a number of vehicles are going to increase in upcoming years. With the same roads and more vehicles, there can be more cases of car dashes. Driverless cars have sensors that do not let the car get too close to other vehicles.

How does a self-driving car work? How do these cars detect nearby vehicles? How do these cars react to road signs and signals? How do these cars stop if an uncertain action takes place? How do the driverless cars understand the separate lanes?

There are many more such questions rising in our minds. There are various systems working in conjunction with each other. There are certain radar sensors which are dotted around the car. These sensors monitor nearby vehicles.

Driverless cars make use of video cameras to identify traffic lights, road signs, pedestrians, obstacles, and other vehicles.

Roads are separated by lane markings and edges. The driverless cars use lidar sensors to detect these markings and edges. Also, some ultrasonic sensors are used to detect the position of curbs and other vehicles who are at a close distance.

These ultrasonic sensors can be used at the time of car parking. All these sensors and analyzed and managed by a central computer. It manipulates the steering, acceleration and braking system of driverless cars.

Google planned to skip the steering wheels in the driverless cars. But considering the potential risks and possibilities of accidents, it dropped the idea. But, if the car system detects that a crash cannot be avoided, it's going to activate the airbags for preparation and tighten all of the seat belts.

What is very wonderful is that it'll do all that in less time than it takes the driving force to easily slap on the brakes.

Technology experts are integrating mobile app development, IoT and driverless cars. With the help of IoT technology, mobile app development companies can enable remote car monitoring.

There are various Android app developers and iOS App developers for hire who are way ahead of time. With the help of mobile apps connected with cars using IoT, users can track the movement of driverless cars from anywhere and any time

.

Let us take an example. A lady who is busy in some office work sends a car to pick her daughter from school. The driverless car picks up her daughter and comes back home safely.

But how does the lady track all these movements? These mobile apps can notify the users about every single activity. The user can see where the car stops, who gets in the car and what route the car is taking to reach from point A to point B.

A software company called "Almotive" has introduced an alternative to the LiDAR system. This alternative is called Low-Cost Cameras. Each pair of these Low-Cost Cameras faces a different location to sense depth and also offer a 360-degree look of the car's surroundings as well as claims the outlet.

These Low-Cost Cameras are not as high-tech as a LiDAR system but can do the same thing by detecting road lines, objects on the road, and other driving-related items.

In short, driverless cars has a great future if we integrate it with ‘internet of things’, and mobile app development.

Every technology has certain problems and cons. It is clear that the driverless car technology is the most awaited revolution by mankind.

Technology experts are working on this technology since the year 1995. Such technologies require years of testing and Government approvals. Let us see some driverless car disasters that raised a million questions.

Stephen Hawking had stated several times about the risks associated with artificial intelligence. There are many scientists who are against the rapid development of artificial intelligence. In such scenarios, it is difficult to ignore the possible flaws of robot cars / driverless cars. In the year 2018, Uber was in process of testing its driverless cars.

On March 17, the car struck and killed a pedestrian in a car accident. The investigation report by the National Transportation Safety Board stated that the pedestrian had been wearing dark clothes and had stepped out on the road without looking.

Usually, in such cases, the driverless cars flag the need for emergency braking. Even in this incident, the driverless car by Uber flagged the emergency braking 1.3 seconds before the impact. But unfortunately, the brakes had not actually applied by the car.

Waymo’s self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans had an accident in the year 2018. The lone driver of the car fell asleep. The driver accidentally turned off the car’s self-driving software by touching the gas pedal before the accident took place.

Though the accident did not kill anyone, we cannot ignore the fact that driverless cars have too sensitive functionalities.

There are many incidents that stopped some big brands by developing more driverless cars. After such incidents, fewer people are willing to buy a driverless car. If companies work on these issues, there can be great scope for this industry in the future.

But right now, there is no surety in the adoption of driverless cars.

Conclusion:

Technology is booming. There is going to be a time where we will see cars flying in the air. Let us sit back and see what all great things are going to come in the upcoming years.
