Joplin - a simple and convenient application for notes in Markdown

Joplin was clearly created with an eye on the famous sweeper. However, it has at least one distinct advantage: it is absolutely free, and it also has open source. In addition, Joplin has clients not only for Windows and macOS, but also for Linux.

The application also supports importing Evernote notes, so if you have been looking for an alternative to the elephant for a long time, perhaps this is it.

Joplin application: interface

Joplin looks very simple - you will not get confused in it. The developers did not come up with anything extraordinary. The appearance is quite usual for a note-taker: a switchable panel with notebooks and tags on the left, a little to the right - a list of notes in an open notebook and an editor area.

By clicking on the view button, you can switch between editing, reading and two-pane mode. In the settings of Joplin there is a dark theme for those who want to work with the text at night.

And for geeks there is a special version of the application that runs directly in the terminal.

Joplin application: text editor

Joplin supports Markdown markup - we already wrote about this syntax. Plain, bold and italic text, headings, tables and images - everything is there for creating readable notes.

You can format the text manually by inserting characters from Markdown, or use the convenient toolbar at the top. Any note, if desired, can be opened in a third-party editor that supports the format of MD. To do this, simply click on the Edit in external editor button.

In addition to simple formatting, there are a couple of goodies in the editor. First, these are links to other notes — a useful thing if you are creating something like a filing cabinet. Secondly - the support of mathematical symbols, which is useful to students leading notes.

Joplin app: organizing notes

You can organize notes in Joplin through notepads and tags - as in the same Evernote. Here only in Joplin notebooks have an unlimited level of nesting.

Those who store so many notes that they can not figure them out, use the built-in search. He searches for words and phrases both by the headlines of the notes and by their contents. Is that the text in the picture does not recognize.

Finally, Joplin allows you to create to-do lists and reminders. Add to any note the date and time when you need to execute it, and the program will show you a notification. Reminders work in both desktop and mobile versions, so Joplin can also be used as a task manager.

Joplin application: web clipper

It is very nice that Joplin has a web clipper, similar to that in Evernote and OneNote. And I must say that it works very well. Clipper can make copies of web pages in four different forms: save only text, format it in Markdown, save the entire page, capture the selected fragment or take a screenshot.

When Joplin makes a copy of a web page in a Markdown text file, it completely preserves its formatting - the font, links, titles, and even images. The notes obtained in this way look very good and are easy to read.

Clipper is available for Chrome and Firefox browsers.

Import and exportJoplin supports importing notes from Evernote. To do this, save your database in ENEX format, and then open the menu File? Import? ENEX - Evernote Export File in the application. During the import, notes, tags, attached files, tables, even geodata and metadata (time of creation, saving, editing notes) are saved.

Using export to ENEX, you can transfer collections of notes not only from Evernote, but also from all applications that support this format. For example, OneNote, Tomboy and NixNote.

There are in Joplin and import notes from text files Markdown, and you can transfer both individual files and entire folders. And the copied elements can be quickly saved both in MD format and in PDF.

Mobile applicationsJoplin has mobile versions for Android and iOS. They are synchronized with the desktop client through the clouds, and with their help it is quite convenient to create both small to-do lists and volume notes.

Mobile clients, like the desktop application, support the insertion of photos, images and attachments. Joplin notes can be synced across multiple platforms via Dropbox, OneDrive, NextCloud, and WebDAV.
