Top Reasons to Choose a Holiday in Venice.

The holidaymaker has never had such a wide choice of destinations and cost-attractive ways of getting there. So, from all the choices you have in front of you, why should you choose a holiday in Venice?

Here are a few points that you might want to take into account.

  1. It’s quite simply beautiful. Descriptions are pointless because some of the sights are global icons and you’re bound to have seen photos of them or representations on TV or in the movies. However, nothing can quite prepare you for the true beauty of this city ‘in the flesh’ – you just need to see it for yourself.
  2. You don’t have to take a long-haul flight for a holiday in Venice, so it makes it ideal for long weekends or shorter breaks.
  3. Italian cuisine is one of the best (even with all due respect to the French, some would say ‘the best’) cuisines in the world. Every city and region will claim to have the best food in Italy, but this one offers some truly great restaurants.
  4. It’s a trip into the past. No, this isn’t just reading guidebooks with long lists of dry historical facts, but rather an experience. As you cruise around the canals or stroll across the piazzi, you’ll get a sense of just what it was like to live in a medieval city.
  5. A holiday in Venice gives you the chance to meet and interact with Italians, surely some of the most hospitable and charming people on the planet. Of course, any individual can have an off day, but typically they have a natural joy for life and are capable of laughing at themselves – two things that are infectious.
  6. The sea. Yes, above we’ve already talked about icons and the futility of trying to describe them, but the sea is truly what makes this city special. Each year the city has a festival where it formally ‘marries’ the sea, such was its historic importance to commerce. For tourists today, just getting around by water-taxi (or other means) and looking at the canals is a breath-taking experience.
  7. The water buses. The ‘Vaporetti’ as they’re called (singular = Vaporetto) are a wonderful way of getting about. With the exception of a few places around the world, such as Hong Kong, they’re almost unique. Yes, they can be crowded and they’re not cheap in the scheme of things, but they’re also great fun!
  8. The architecture and historic sites. True, you either love history and old buildings or you don’t. Yet this lovely city has some real beauties to explore; a tour can open your eyes to the close links between this part of Europe and places in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean during the medieval period when the city was a major world power.

So, that’s just eight good reasons to think about a holiday in Venice – and there are so many more!
