All You Need to Know About Cocos Island Accommodation
Posted: Feb 14, 2019
If you’re planning on a trip to a Cocos Island resort, you’re in for a fantastic treat. The islands are an amazing destination, but to make the most of your trip, you need to look beyond booking your Cocos Island accommodation and prepare properly. So, here we’ll explore all you need to know about the island and making the most of your accommodation.
What You Pack
All you’ll need in the Cocos Islands is comfortable and casual clothing. With a mild, tropical climate, you’ll also need to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and bathers. Your Cocos Island accommodation is likely to provide beach towels and umbrellas, so you shouldn’t need to weigh down your luggage with these extras. If you’re planning on doing lots of beach combing and reef walking, you’ll need a pair of sturdy shoes that you’re not bothered about getting dirty, a pair of old trainers will work well. Just remember, if you plan to visit the Home Island, you’ll need to respect the Cocos Malay culture and cover your shoulders, and wear conservative clothing.
Specialist Snacks
If you’re a picky eater and you just have to have a certain snack, be sure to bring them with you. Special foods can sometimes be tricky to obtain on the Cocos, but be sure to buy your items from a major supermarket in order to comply with the current Quarantine requirements when you arrive. Ensure that you pack any food items in your check in bags as it may be confiscated if you put it in your hand luggage.
Getting Around
The West Island is 14 kilometres in length with settlements mid island. This means that you need to ensure that your Cocos Island resort is in a convenient location. There are local buses that run to the Rumah Baru jetty from the town centre, with ferries running between the Home Island and West Island several times each day, apart from Sundays. You’re likely to find details of the latest timetables at your accommodation, but if you are worried about getting around, be sure to place an advanced booking for a rental car.
Dining Out
There are several places to enjoy great food on the island with western style meals, cafes and fusion cuisine on offer. This provides some great opportunities to dine out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a la carte or buffet menus. Some venues require booking a reservation, but this can usually be arranged at the resort. If you fancy a less formal experience and want to get out into nature, there are several fantastic picnic areas. Many of these have a BBQ, so you can make a day of it. There are some spectacular views at the Cocos Seaview BBQ area, or you can choose a remote corner of the island and relax with one of the picnic sets.
