Embracing the Taj
Posted: May 30, 2014
Located by the River Yamuna, the Taj Mahal is a piece of fairy tale in real life. The most renowned of all monuments in India, the Taj Mahal is one of the world’s seven wonders. Constructed in 1630 AD, this tomb enshrines the mortal remains of Mughal regent Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal. A monument dedicated to love, it took more than 20 years to be constructed and about 20,000 artisans to finish the magnificent job.
To take the Taj Mahal tour in India, you have to visit Agra, which is located in Uttar Pradesh, a state in the northern part of India. The best way is take a train or car from New Delhi, which is about 125 miles away. There are many train services from places in Rajasthan and other north Indian states as well. The recently completed Yamuna Expressway makes it possible for you to reach Agra from Delhi in less than three hours. Numerous flights are also available to Agra from a few cities.
The Taj Mahal is open each day of the week, save Fridays, when it remains closed because of prayers. The monument also remains open, such that tourists can view the ethereal beauty in the moonlight, between 8.30 pm and 12.30 am, a couple of days prior to and after every night that there is a full moon in the sky.
If you are a foreigner, the fee to enter the Taj Mahal is Rs 250 (tax for entry, charged by the Archaeological Society of India) and another Rs 500 (tax for toll purposes, charged by the Agra Development Authority). If you are an Indian, you need to pay only Rs 20 to enter. Children, who are less than 15 years old, can enter free of charge. The price of tickets for viewing, for half an hour, in the nights is Rs 750, if you are a foreigner, and Rs 500, if you are an Indian. Such tickets need to be bought a day prior to the actual tour, from the office of the Archaeological Survey of India that is located at Mall Road.
For the best times to take the Taj Mahal tour in India, you should try to plan your tour around the time of the Taj Mahotsav, which takes place for a week around the middle of February every year. Enjoy fantastic parades, rides on elephants and camels, food fests, and games for the kids. The significance of the festival site, that is Agra’s Shilpgram, located close to the Taj, is that this place is supposed to have housed the living quarters of the workers who helped build the monument.
