Cyber Range Security Training

In today’s world, it’s essential to have cyber security skills. And, while many cyber security training methods can be effective, none will be more realistic and lifelike than using a cyber range.

What is a cyber range?

The best way to think of a cyber range is to relate it to a military training operation. While you can spend months giving your troops training drills and enhancing their military skillsets, the reality of war is harsh and highly unpredictable. Therefore, a variety of realistic scenarios can be one of the most effective ways to prepare troops for war. In the same way, giving your employees a few cyber security skills can have them prepared for a lot of basic threats. However, if a threat comes along that’s more complex than what they’ve seen before, then there’s a chance that they won’t know how to deal with it, but won’t be able to work together and have the right problem-solving mindset that’s needed in the moment.

A cyber range works by simulating a real-world scenario. This is cyber security simulation and training at it’s very best. The real world scenario is designed to represent a realistic threat that could occur somewhere in the future. The employees and left to use their expertise, knowledge, teamwork, and problem solving skills in order to figure out how to eliminate the threat.

How effective are cyber ranges?

Of course, utilizing a cyber range doesn’t come cheap. There are a lot of variables involved in setting up the right simulation. Therefore, they’re usually restricted to larger corporations and organizations. However, the benefits include the following:

  • Today’s IT world is incredibly complex. It’s impossible to know everything, no matter how good your cyber security skills are. An important trait to have, therefore, is adaptability. Because, when all said and done, you’ll have no idea what type a threat will land on your doorstep until it’s too late. Having gone through many iterations of a cyber range, you will have already worked through a process of identifying and dealing with a threat. You will have been exposed to many problems and will hopefully have the skills needed to deal the threat.
  • One of the biggest threats to your security are the weak links in your system. The problem, is that you may not even be aware of what those week links are. By running various, realistic cyber range training scenarios you’ll have a much better chance of spotting if a particular employee has a lack of experience in a certain area, or any other weakness. When you’ve identified any issues, you can go about fixing them. For example, in the case of an employee who lacks experience, you can send them on a training course to cover their weak areas.

A mere Powerpoint, or textbook is quite simply not enough to deal with the complex world of cyber effects. That’s why it’s important to invest in a training solution that is.
