Pros And Cons Of Working On And Off Campus

Introduction

It is very common for students to decide on taking up a part-time job. There may be several reasons to making such a choice like having extra time on your hands and thinking that you could use some extra money or paying your own way through college.

Whatever the reason, it goes without saying that in order to make such a decision, you need to take into account all the pros and cons of working while studying because taking up a job requires your commitment.

As a college student, there are two main types of jobs you can get. On campus or off campus employment. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Working On Campus

As the word suggests, you work part time "ON campus".

On campus jobs include working in the Library shelving books, in computer labs taking care of printers or terminals, working in cafeterias, as a receptionist in the college office, administration work in the different departments of the college or teaching and research assistantship.

On campus jobs can be very convenient, but they have their pros and cons.

Pros

  • Your job is closer to your dorm or hostel and you will not have to worry about commuting.
  • Your campus employers are used to working with college students and you do not need to have work experience in order to get the job.
  • The employers will do their best to work around your class schedule.
  • You don’t have to worry about working during breaks or during your exam schedule.
  • You don’t have to work late hours.

Cons

  • Job opportunities are limited and often very competitive.
  • Jobs have limited hours or a maximum amount you can work per week.
  • Most of the time they pay a minimum wage.
  • There is limited exposure which does not exceed beyond students, faculty and staff.

Working Off campus

This job refers to any job outside the college campus.

Pros

  • They offer more freedom
  • You have a lot of options to choose from.
  • You can work for as many hours as you see fit.
  • The pay is more and you can even expect raises.
  • Exposure to many different types of people
  • You get to experience a different environment.

Cons

  • You will need work experience in order to get hired.
  • The job may be away from your dorm and you will need to spend on commuting.
  • You will be working with experienced people and not just students.
  • There is a possibility of working late hours
  • You might not have enough time to study.
  • Leisure time is limited.

Conclusion

There are two sides to every coin. Similarly working on or off campus has its pros and cons. Hence any decision must be taken wisely keeping in mind all the possibilities. Any student who wants to work on or off campus must always remember that study is his first priority.
