What is Conjunctivitis?

Pink Eye" - Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is one of the most common causes of a red, irritated eye, commonly called a pink eye. It is usually caused by a virus similar to the one that causes the common cold; however, there are instances of conjunctivitis that are bacterial in origin. For this reason, it is not unusual to have the symptoms of cold before, during, and after a bout of conjunctivitis.

How is Conjunctivitis Treated?

Just like a common cold, viral infections like conjunctivitis usually improve on their own, without treatment. Frequently, eye drops are prescribed to ease the symptoms.

On the other hand, bacterial conjunctivitis requires treatment with antibiotic eye drops to cure it. For this reason, it is important to seek the care of an eye doctor.

Conjunctivitis is Contagious

Viral infections are highly contagious. Just like the common cold, you can spread the virus causing conjunctivitis by coughing or sneezing. Sharing items that touch the eye, like makeup and towels, is another good way to spread the virus. Frequent hand washing and avoiding rubbing the eyes are good ways to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Because conjunctivitis is so contagious, most schools insist that children be treated and the condition clear before returning to school. Usually, the condition improves in a few days, so time away from school or work due to conjunctivitis is usually minimal.

Corneal Edema

Corneal edema is a buildup of fluid or swelling of the cornea that can produce clouding of the cornea and significant decrease in vision. This may occur following surgery on the eye, particularly cataract surgery. It may occur spontaneously, with inflammation of the cornea or as a result of corneal dystrophies.

When the cornea swells, it becomes thick and cloudy, blocking the passage of light into the eye. When corneal edema is a result of infection or inflammation, antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatory drops may ease the swelling, allowing for an improvement in vision. When the edema is due to dystrophies, corneal transplantation may be necessary.

Corneal Opacity

The cornea is normally clear; however, it can become cloudy, or opacified, due to the presence of scar tissue, an injury, or infection. Scar tissue prevents light from passing through the cornea resulting in vision loss. Scar tissue can be removed surgically, or by use of the excimer laser in a procedure known as phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK). When the scar tissue or opacification extends deeper into the corneal tissue, a cornea transplant may be necessary.
