Memory Card: Buy which one is best for you

Camera, mobile, tablet, drone... without memory card almost does not serve you anything. But which one is the best for you?

A 256GB microSD card for 10 Euro? Sensational! Thus, we buy the card in the online shop wish after all, comparable models cost so 10 times more, But the bargain it turned out to be a scam and instead of 256GB the storage cards 2.8 GHz scan to 5 MB / s.

On a surface like the tip of a finger, memory cards store up to 30 movies in Full HD, 16,000 photos or 25,000 songs. Not only they are on mobile phones, cameras or tablets, but they also accompany drones, dash cams and action cams in their adventures. We tested 24 memory cards of different types: 6 microSD of 64 GB and other 6 of 128 GB; 6 SD of 64 GB, as well as 3 SD of 128 GB and other 3 of 128 GB with the technology UHS-II.

Not only the capacity is important, but also the technology. The performance of the cards is seen on their labels, with abbreviations like these:

SD/SDHC/SDXC: SD cards reach a maximum of 2 GB. SDHC models up to 32 GB and SDXC models up to 2 TB.

UHS-I/UHS-II: SD UHS-I reach up to 104 MB / s, with UHS-II you reach 312 MB / s.

Class: indicates the minimum write speed in MB / s. Class 10 means 10 MB / s.

U1/U3: the number behind the U indicates the write speed with UHS-I or UHS-II. U1 is 10 MB / s, U3 is 30 MB / s

V6-V90: also speed, special for video. From 6 MB / s (V6) to 90 MB / s (V90).

Speed Is Not Everything

The test showed huge differences in speed and prices. The most expensive card costs € 333 and the cheapest only € 21. But who needs a high-speed card?

Above all, photographers that shoot a high resolution photo in series. With a slow card, you have to wait for the photos to be stored in memory. Users of good cameras should use a card of at least 100MB / s.

If you record video, you do not need the fastest card: even in 4K, a writing speed of 30 MB / s is enough. All the candidates got it.

On the other hand, although fast cards copy photos and videos from PC faster, you need a fast card reader connected to a USB 3.0 port (available in the market from about 15 Euro).

Conclusion

One test, five winners: among the microSD, they won the Kingston uSD Rea (64 GB) and the SanDisk Extreme Plus UHS-I (128 GB). Of the SD cards, the first were the PNY Elite performance (64 GB) and Hama SDXC U3 V30 top (128 GB). And in the SD UHS-II (128 GB) win Sony G Series SDXC UHS-II.
