Data science has four principal components: statistics, machine learning, programming, and domain expertise. To become a successful data scientist, you need to understand what each of these components are, what are the most essential skills you can hold and what are the tools or technologies you need to know.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: ANALYTICS

Education – Data scientists are extremely educated – 88% have Master’s degree at least and 46% have PhDs – and while there are important exceptions, a very solid educational background is usually needed to develop the depth of knowledge needed to be a data scientist. Their most common fields of study are Mathematics and Statistics (32%), followed by Engineering (16%) and Computer Science (19%)

SQL Database/Coding – Even though NoSQL and Hadoop have become a huge component of data science, it is still required that a candidate will be able to write and execute complex queries in SQL.

Unstructured data – It is important that a data scientist be able to work with unstructured data, whether it is from social media, video feeds or audio.
